Include D&I criteria in your RFPs (requests for proposal), whenever you have to hire new vendors. Include questions on representation, women in leadership positions, board composition and even ask open questions on what is the approach the company has on D&I. You will probably be able to determine, based on the answers, if that company is truly committed or if it is just for show. Ask them to present data. Those who just have a wish to have D&I will show in the way they structure their response, and they will not have specific data on it.

It is your job to build and seek out a diverse network, be it suppliers, candidates, communities etc. You must take it upon yourself to build your network beyond how it grows organically. This will not only ensure that you have a diverse talent pool at your finger tips, it will ensure you are creating the best work possible.

I’d also establish a vendor audit system to monitor compliance and provide support for vendors to improve their practices. Building long-term partnerships with diverse vendors reinforces mutual growth and helps advance our sustainability mission.
