How can you maintain creativity when working on repetitive tasks as a Software Design professional?

I believe one key practice or habit is continuous learning, and it would be better if one learns about different industries, business domains, Technologies, even if it is not directly related to their own tasks. Cross domain knowledge provides diverse perspectives when looking at solving problems or doing repetitive tasks and accordingly generate more creative and innovative solutions, and as well provide the capability to detect opportunities to change and optimize. Take a look at "Range" a good book by David Epstein in this context.

Software Design is a creative field, even though some tasks may appear repetitive. Whether you're working on a new algorithm, implementing a new solution, or refactoring old code, all allow for creativity and innovation. Collaborate with others through design reviews. Use core review practice as a learning and creative opportunity, regardless of your seniority. Give yourself the headspace to learn new technologies and find ways to adapt them whenever possible.

One way I see, is to find ways of doing the mundane tasks differently, for example try to use tech to automate, or help make it faster. If you are not sure of which tech could help, try researching on how others have done it, also ChatGPT can come up with some interesting suggestions.

In my experience keeping reusability In mind for features makes a huge difference. I have seen two types of developers. 1) Who always focuses on completing the assigned task in given time regardless of thinking about the reusability or future scope of the feature. 2) Who always try to see 360 degree side picture of the feature where it helps her/him to understand the scope and making it reusable for further enhancements. It may take time initially to think about how repetitive tasks can be handled proactively. Practice makes perfect and the repetitive work will get handled efficiently and much more time will be saved. The time saved for repetitive tasks helps to do another creative work or can help other teammates where it requires.

How we look at the task affects how we feel about it and if it's routine then it might be boring and everyone tries to escape from it in various ways. The most common and widely used path is automation. I believe the first simplest step is to try to organize and standardize tasks. Next is to identify linkages & and connect the dots and then if it's worth automation then automate depending on its sustainability.

Repetition sometimes means thats you are doing it wrong. Step back, re-evaluate and remember that repetition is literally what you are in this business for, to off-load repetitive tasks, and replace it with automation. Are you cutting and pasting? Wasting effort when a tool could be employed to make things less repetitive? Are you doing similar rather than identical things again and again? Factor out the commonality and let a machine do some or all of it. Due diligence to see if someone has faced this problem before and solved it with a less repetitive solution is always worth a few hours of your time.

If you focus on one thing at a time and keep spending a lot of energy into that innovation always happens. If you are trying to just get out of solving that problem you would not achieve much. I encourage always to think from the customer perspective and what would they do next beyond your stated solution. This iterative process and bouncing your ideas around a diverse set of folks always yields greatest outcomes. You would actually create tangential outcomes from the solution(s) you are building. Innovation can be an engineering process. If you trust that an start iterate on ideas you will find the best innovative product

To understand what makes you excited is very important when you are working with monotonous natured tasks. Only once you know your creativity triggers, you can try to create avenues where you can add some routines in your daily life. E.g one of my colleagues was very passionate about algorithms so during lunch breaks, he used to solve one algorithmic problem. As time passed, the whole team got engaged in the end. This exercise helped us even to revamp one of our services.

Spend some time every day as focus time. Where you are investing into personal growth, change the way of thinking, adopting strategic thinking. Very few people have this capability to ponder over things and looking for ways to improve. That habit I believe is the key to success

Few Practices I have followed to break the monotony are: 1. Start exploring other modules apart from the module you are working on. By doing this you will get in-depth knowledge of internals of the apis you are using in your module. You can try to find best possible way to use API’s by doing so. 2. Whenever work seems monotonous start working on improving the system be it performance specific, be it automating few tasks or exploring alternate ways of doing the same stuff. 3. Start small and try to experiment with alternative approaches and document if there is any improvement or not. 4. Check what is missing in your project and start improving on it: check if cleanup is required, test cases are missing, any new tech stack is introduced

The monotony of the repetitive tasks can be broken by thinking in terms of the existing process and performance hotspots that exist in the system. These are great avenues to challenge the decisioning of the past and gradually evolve a parallel system, that can be functionally and non-functionally measured against an already working environment.

To avoid monotony in repetitive tasks add some automation to it. Automation will not replace you but will make you perform batter and will give more time to improve.

Although the environment around us plays a significant role, our inspiration actually comes from our inner being, someone would call it heart. Context switching is a technique that I've successfully used for myself and my engineering teams over the years. We often get into a shell while working on a task and no matter what we do, our mind confines ourselves to those boundaries if we don't change things around us. It always helps to mix things up - helps overcome the mental block and increases our productivity as well.

Monotony prevails in every individual except in the one's who are active in what they are doing and what can be the best way to do it. Procrastination can be a major cause of monotony and to get out of it one can really need to create variety in everyday routine like changing working environment, interaction with new people, learn new concepts, get mentorship and participate in other side projects.

It doesn't matter which position you are based in, one always needs a mentor in life, someone to fall back to check the perception about the work one is doing. Even though everything might seem correct, take a pause and spend time to get the right feedback from the right people. For me it has been helpful to conduct few meetings with my friends/colleagues as something I call as "Brain Dump" where I share what I am feeling about a particular task and how I think I will be approaching it and my peer share their thoughts, which always help me to get more opinion on it and do a check if I am on right path or not.

Indeed, this is a wonderful idea. I used to make it a point to have my lunchtime or tea time with different stakeholders and colleagues. If it is a repetitive task one of the ways of adding value is to think of a way to automate the process either fully or partially. This can save time and add lots of value. Also if you are repetitively answering the same questions about your platform or service, consider creating a blog, video or pod cast that can address the questions or problems. Yet another idea is to create a self-service for your software customers to do these repetitive tasks themselves.

I feel the software engineering cult is growing rapidly and is stronger than ever, so you might find some helpful and talented folks out there. As all of us can only answer to you according to our own experience which might not be relevant in your scenario. My own way is just asking and knowing about their thought processes while solving a problem, instead of directly jumping into their solution.

Even though we do repetitive work, There is always scope of improvement. A few examples are: automate more , change the libraries, Try replacing with a better algorithm, add more code docs. Extract components which can bring re usability. The best technology available happens when we repetitive work.

I don't believe that creativity comes from the drawing board. Really new ideas come from trying things out and experimenting. You look for solutions and try out new approaches. You find something and delve deeper into it until completely new concepts emerge. A design thinking approach is particularly important in large-scale software systems. Some of my best solutions come out of experimenting with a process, technology, or a new tool. Take the time to look at a problem from a different angle. You’ll be surprised. Avoid any personal touches or jokes inside of your product except for a few key areas: internal comments and documentation, blog and/or corporate website.

With repetitive work, the scope of problem solving is immense. Trying to introduce changes in terms of automation, introducing new data structures, algorithms, design patterns, are just a few examples of the experimentation that can happen. I still recall working on a product that had a ton of formal product documentation, developer notes in bug systems, and lots of internal training documents. Searching through that pile of knowledge was a formidable task in itself. I recall the change in the developers I worked with to set up a knowledge graph system that would advise the developer on a potential fix, when errors were reported from the field.

Solve the problem! It is important to Channelize all energy in solving the problem and it will make you go deep and to explore around. Optimize - Find opportunities to save and improve. Enables creative thinking and be proactive in removing any inefficiencies causing repetition. Observe patterns - Every problem has a known or an unknown pattern. It would either lead to learn a new pattern or find a known pattern that can help solve the problem faster. Remove yourself - Automate your own actions to save energy and time and invest in other places. Look for ways to enable others to act on their own, eg automated alerts that recipients can act on. Generalize - Reuse for other problems. Eg use alert automations for other areas.

There is no one size fits all approach here. Just because something works well for me and my team doesn't mean it will work well for others. The key is to experiment, measure and pivot quickly if something isn't working for you.

It's not always about 'what' is being done or 'how'. While doing the chores I have the chance to focus more on 'who' is doing the job. What's so tedious for me about the task? What if I'm not having fun in other aspects of my work life? Do I need support or recognition and am I getting it enough?
