What do you do if your photography skills need improvement?

I think in any field is there is ALWAY room for improvement and learning! I am CONSTANTLY taking classes and workshops, studying visual art of all genres and eras, and making certain I am looking at the work of those who are BETTER and more experienced than me. Practice on everything and everyone and trust that the more you shoot and edit the better you will get! A great photographer is not born overnight!

Years ago I was taught that "pictures make pictures". Improving skills is a never ending journey and the more you work at it your skills will grow. Along with continued efforts I also believe it's good practice to simplify at times and be intentional when making pictures.Slow down and become engaged with your subject. Don't allow gear to get in the way of your connection with your subject.

When I started off in photography way back in the 90's when I started to take it a little more seriously, I would photograph anything I could see. With film you just had to take images and then see what turned out and what appealed to you. With the introduction of digital I decided to purchase a fuji bridge camera and see what the results were. This lead me to experiment with wildlife, still life, landscapes and then portraiture. using studio equipment was easier and I became aware of me leaning toward portraiture, so I then purchased a sony and a 50mm lens. The rest is history. But for trying different styles i would not have discovered my strengths in portraits. Follow what makes you feel good when looking at your results

Creo que es súper importante saber en qué estás fallando. Tomar esa aptitud y practicar hasta mejorar. Uno no se da cuenta que mejora hasta que se lo mencionan o revisa su trabajo de años anteriores. Siempre estamos mejorando, solo necesitamos seguir avanzando y no quedarnos estancados. Leer de las nuevas tecnologías, nuevos consejos, nuevas formas de mirar el mundo ayudan harto en el desarrollo de tu habilidades. Ser contaste y nos frustrarse por no ver resultados inmediatos.

En mi experiencia personal, la combinación de educación formal, práctica constante y la voluntad de salir de mi zona de confort ha sido fundamental para mejorar mis habilidades fotográficas.

Some of my most educational experiences came from collaborating with other photographers--sometimes it was planned and sometimes it was by chance. I was always willing to share what I knew, and grateful to be enlightened by those who knew more. More often than not those sharing experiences resulted in each of us being more creative in our approaches, and almost never did the results mirror each other.

Spend the time studying others images, particularly in the art world. See what feeds your soul and then try to replicate it. Still life paintings help you to see the lighting used, as does people portraits. Chase the light if you are looking to create landscapes. Always! be looking at how light and shadow are working to add depth to your world and then replicate it in your work. Practice, practice, practice. With camera on the phone being so good today there really is no excuse for not taking better images of the things that appeal to you. Don't just snap away, breathe and direct your image. Be it a person animal or landscape, you are the director and producer of the final image, just by making the decision to connect withit.

Always recommend assigning yourself personal projects. Work it as if it is a paid job and complete on a deadline. The project can be learning a new Photoshop technique, a new off-camera lighting setup or practicing posing with new looks in mind. Once the project has been completed to your satisfaction and the new moves become yours go out and sell them to potential clients. That becomes the carrot/stick the stick is to learn the reward is putting it to use.

You can experiment on your own, utilise free online resources, participate in workshops, or level up your skills with the personalised guidance of a mentor.

It's worth deciding to try something you've always been previously quite against doing. For example, if you never saw yourself getting along to a camera club and meeting likeminded individuals, why not try it? You can learn loads from other people engaged in the same craft. Or if you never fancied using a macro lens, why not rent one and spend a day playing about with it?

As a combined media artist, photography is a very important integral part of my practice so I am always looking to improve my skills but when push comes to shove, I'm not going to talk about long walk off a short bridge or stage elaborate photo shots. I am always open to collaboration and feel best as a producer / auteur and social entrepreneur.

This is the only smart Advice. Photography is easy. You can learn 90% of technical aspects in one weekend. After that, is the practice. You need to test, to experiment, and what I belive is most important - Refining. Doing same idea over and over to find the best approach.

Limiting yourself in some way can make you come up with all sorts of fresh ideas and images. For example, tell yourself you're only "allowed" to use a 50mm for a week when you're out and about photographing purely for yourself, and see what you come up with!

You need to get uncomfortable to get better. Dont sit churning out the same stuff. Go seek inspiration. Challenge yourself. I mean it. There are many free challenges online to try. You can start small that you only use one lens all day and do portraits, fashion and street. Or use only monochromatic colours etc. etc. Push yourself.

Practice,practice duplicate the works of other photographers never stop until you get the same result.You will develop your skills if you are doing it every single day like a basketball player who love what they do.

Look at as many photos as you can, there are any number of good websites that show a wide variety of styles. Through this process, you gradually develop a knowledge of perspective, techniques and a standard of comparison. In photography, anything goes: For example compare the styles of Robert Frank to Daido Moriyama to Henry Wessel to Sarah Moon to Trent Parke to Helen Levitt to Deborah Turbeville, etc

It's also worth seeking feedback from other artists who use different media, not photographs, to express themselves. You could ask a artist painter what he feels when he looks at a certain image you've taken. It doesn't just need to be other photographers who can give you really insightful ideas and opinions on your work.

Faites un tri et repérez les photographes qui sont pour vous incroyable. Cherchez la différence avec vos propres photos. Regardez le haut niveau pas les autres. Imprégnez-vous.

My Chief started me from scratch, gave me assignments, and then after processing the film would sit down and examine every frame. "What's this?" he would ask. "Does it add anything to the photo? I learned to shoot tight, and precisely, and that skill has never left me.

This article is such an AI cliché that it does not work: I have worked around photographers for 20 years and seriously I don´t know anybody who reviewed their strengths and weakness, set SMART, reviewed and iterated! That's not a technique that you have to learn, you don't need to be efficient at anything. If you pursue photography, just school your sense of esthetics ( book, shows, etc..) and try to take pictures you'll like! If you are serious about it go the long way and read books instead of consulting YouTube....

Get a mentor. If you’re serious about your photography seek the help of someone who is not only a great photographer, but a great teacher. They can help you assess all of the above, hold you accountable to practice, and guide you in making smart investments in time and money.

Nothing will teach you more than actually working in the field. You may need to take on jobs for the experience without being exploited (which is a fine line to walk). It's a shame small newspapers have disappeared because working as a photojournalist for a small newspaper was an unrivaled educational experience.

Faites vous aider. Investissez dans voter formation. Balayez vite le technique pour pouvoir faire ce que vous voulez artistiquement. Ne rentrez pas dans un moule.

I would seek feedback from mentors, and ensure you get accurate critique not soft sugar coated pats on the back. You only learn through mistakes and we can all improve either through speed, accuracy or technique. Often software provides improvements and sometimes it’s skill or technique or all the above. Remember you don’t have to be the best at everything, but you should understand the process and what is achievable and in what time frame so you can outsource if needed. Clients need a solution not a jack of all trades. You can provide the solution through outsourcing the areas your not strong in.
