How do you become a publicist?

My PR journey began with a formal education in the field, followed by diverse agency experience. Each step was a building block, adding to my understanding of the industry. However, when commercial real estate called, I truly found my calling. Being a specialist, especially in a complex field like commercial real estate, has been a game-changer. It has allowed me to build more meaningful relationships with the media and develop a nuanced understanding of the subject matter. So much so that it isn't just professional – I'm also an active investor in the space now.

First, learn your audience. When I was 17, I took my first job in retail sales at a big box store. I learned to talk to people, all kinds of people, since the clientele was pretty varied. I continued working in retail sales through college, and with each job, I learned how to hone my message for the customer who was in front of me. Second, learn how to write effectively. Much of your work in publicity is written (social, blogs, press releases, e-blasts, etc.), so the ability to successfully, and succinctly, get your message across in writing is imperative. Lastly, practice, practice practice. Practice finding your target audience, crafting your message, and making sure that message is tailored to them.

I started as a gopher with Point Media back in 87. I watched and learned about SMT's Radio Tours, Video packages and anything I could watch and learn. One day the owner came in and said, why don't we get you on the phones and start pitching. If you love the job you are in, learn every aspect and angle of the business. I took improv classes to build my interactions with clients with every situation and to be creative and think on my feet. I was told very early on that PR is a 24 hour job, they weren't kidding. They don't call it Public Relations for nothing!

I had no formal training (here in the UK), but a deep interest in words, writing, brands, media and people. I took the Howard Roark approach. I decided that's what I wanted to be, and started building toward it objectively. I got an education in History, which turned out to be valuable because that's reading long form sources and writing about it in a compelling way. Media is a story after all. Then I did a PR Management program at a great school. I worked at a marketing firm doing dirty work before that. Then I acquainted myself with some humiliating work for a while to develop a nice sheild. I did some freelance work for clients before landing a 13 year career with a government full service communications agency. I retired from that and just started my new independent practice as an artist-entrepreneur. I'm in it just like my clients. I love it
