The L3S Research Center welcomes applications for the following position, starting February 1st, 2025:

Research Associate (PhD Student) in Artificial Intelligence (salary scale 13 TV-L, 100 %)

The fixed-term position ends on December 31, 2027, with the possibility of extension, and offers the possibility of a PhD. The place of work will be Hannover.

Your role

At L3S, new machine learning, generative AI, and robotics approaches are developed for a broad spectrum of applications, ranging from production to medicine.

Your task will include:

  • to work independently on corresponding research questions and development tasks in the context of projects in the field of AI
  • to work with regional businesses on applications of AI
  • to publish research results at international conferences and in scientific journals
Who are we looking for?

The prerequisite for employment is a completed scientific university degree (Master or Diploma) in computer science. We also expect very good German and English skills, both oral and written.

Ideally, you will also have

  • in-depth knowledge in several areas of artificial intelligence
  • the ability and willingness to collaborate with experts from different scientific and technical disciplines as well as from industry

The L3S Research Center welcomes applications for the following position, starting as soon as possible:

Student Assistant for the L3S’s Offshore-II Project (up to 60 hours per month)

This position is limited to the end of the project on January 31, 2026

Your role

Your tasks will include supporting or collaborating in:

  • Reimplementing a MATLAB package into Python
  • Configure the package, so that it is compatible with other libraries
  • Developing a process discovery algorithm for Generalised Stochastic Petri Nets
  • Creating Repositories and Documentation


Who are we looking for?

The candidate must fulfil the following requirements:

  • Enrolment at a German university
  • Advanced Bachelor’s degree or beginning of a master’s degree in computer science, electronics, mechatronics or similar
  • Very good or good knowledge of English and German
  • Very good knowledge of MATLAB, Python, Git
  • Prior knowledge of Process Mining and/or Petri Nets theory is a plus
  • Communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work in a team, reliability, sense of responsibility and flexibility

The L3S Research Center is offering a position as Student Assistant in the Robotics Lab, to be filled as soon as possible. The position is initially limited to one semester. A longer-term employment also during the lecture-free period is aimed for.

The L3S is an internationally renowned research center for basic and applied research in the field of artificial intelligence for digital transformation, founded in 2001. The L3S research center develops forward-looking research methods and technologies for the digital transformation and researches the effects of digitalization in the areas of production, mobility, medicine and education.

Your tasks:
  • Setting up the robots and the robotics laboratory
  • Configuring and testing the robots
  • Development of robotics demonstrations
  • Collecting data using real robots in the laboratory
  • Developing machine learning algorithm
  • Processing multi-modal sensor data

Your profile:
