As the Marvel Cinematic Universe struggles to re-establish its cultural gravitas in the aftermath of massive films like “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” few titles on its upcoming slate are as anticipated as “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” In addition to adapting what’s arguably the most beloved Stan Lee and Jack Kirby property not yet seen in Disney’s MCU, Matt Shakman’s upcoming film also boasts a white-hot cast featuring Pedro Pascal, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn.
“‘Fantastic Four’ is the foundation for everything that came after in the comics,” Kevin Feige said in a 2023 interview Entertainment Weekly announcing the project. “There’s certainly been versions of it [onscreen], but never inhabiting the storytelling of the MCU. And that’s something that is really exciting for us. People will start to hear more about that soon. We plan on that being a big pillar of the MCU going forward, just the way they’ve been in the comics for 50 or 60 years.”
The first trailer for “The Fantastic Four” echoes the 1960s throwback aesthetic that the film’s early marketing materials, while showing Pascal’s Mr. Fantastic, Kirby’s Invisible Woman, Quinn’s Human Torch, and Moss-Bachrach’s The Thing in action. Julia Garner also plays the Silver Surfer, AKA Shalla-Bal. The character is a centuries-old alien who still has the appearance of a young woman.
Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”) directs from a script by Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. Shakman joined the project after originally being attached to direct the fourth “Star Trek” film for Paramount.
The film is part of Marvel’s Phase 6, which will begin with the “Thunderbolts” on May 2.
The new “Fantastic Four” reboot was announced in 2020 after Disney acquired the characters through its purchase of 20th Century Fox. The first “Fantastic Four” film was released in 2005, followed by 2007 sequel “The Silver Surfer.” The franchise was revived in 2015 with standalone film “Fantastic Four.” The new installment, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” will also be an origin story set during the time of when the first comic book of the characters was released.
