Dating can be a chore — but for Meghann Fahy’s single-mother character in the upcoming Blumhouse thriller “Drop,” it can also quickly turn into a deadly game of iPhone cat and mouse.

Directed and co-written (with Jillian Jacobs) by Christopher Landon (“Happy Death Day”), the movie stars Fahy as a woman on a chic first date who is just starting to hit it off with the handsome man (Brandon Sklenar, “It Ends With Us”) across the table from her when her phone begins buzzing with notifications. Someone in the restaurant is Airdropping messages to her… messages that become increasingly personal and threatening when they include photos of her son. The rules to saving her boy are simple: She can’t tell anyone what’s going on… and she has to kill her date.

If anyone can accomplish a lot with just facial expressions, though, it might be Fahy, who scored an Emmy nomination for her work on “The White Lotus” Season 2.

The trailer reveals the movie to be luminously shot and suffused with some intense action sequences — including one of Fahy hanging out of a shattered picture window. Landon knows a thing or two about constructing crafty thrillers; in addition to the “Happy Death Day” franchise, he’s the director behind
“Freaky” and “We Have a Ghost.”

Joining Fahy in the cast are Sklenar, Violett Beane, Jacob Robinson, Ed Weeks, and Jeffery Self.

“Drop” is produced by Jason Blum (“Five Nights at Freddy’s,” “M3GAN”) for Blumhouse and by Michael Bay (“Transformers” films, “A Quiet Place” franchise), Brad Fuller (“A Quiet Place” films, “The Purge” franchise). and Cameron Fuller (the upcoming “Flycatcher and The Astronaut”) for Platinum Dunes. Ron Lynch and Sam Lerner are executive producers.

Universal will drop “Drop” in theaters April 11. Watch the trailer below. And remember to turn your phone to Do Not Disturb when you’re on a date.
