“Without Limits” (1998)

“Without Limits” was the second and stronger of two late 1990s films on record-setting long-distance runner Steve Prefontaine; the other was “Prefontaine” (1997), starring Jared Leto. “Without Limits” stars Billy Crudup in a perceptive and discerning character study of a great athlete and his visionary coach, Bill Bowerman (Donald Sutherland). Prefontaine died in a fatal 1975 automobile accident, at the young age of 25, which is where the film ends, although it provides enough insight into his impact on the sport. Tom Cruise was a producer on the film which earned Sutherland a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
