One of the rare January horror film releases to actually satisfy, ‘M3gan’ and its knowing camp made it catnip for horror fans upon its 2023 release. The primary target for the memes generated by the Blumhouse release was the titular doll-android itself, a Tiktok dancing, wildly silly looking menace that begins to take horrific measures to protect her young charge Cady (Violet McGraw). But Gerard Johnstone’s film really shines when it lets Allison Williams, playing Cady’s distant aunt turned reluctant mother figure, add some subtle, underplayed comedy to the equation, from her barely disguised disinterest in parenting to the deadpan way she navigates the increasingly absurd horrors. The film is due for a sequel soon, so here’s hoping it will be able to recapture the original’s blithe magic. —WC
