“Nosferatu” (Craig Lathrop), “Wicked” (Nathan Crowley), and “Conclave” (Suzie Davies) were the period, fantasy, and contemporary production design winners at the 29th annual Art Directors Guild Awards, held February 15 at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown.
Also winning for animation was “The Wild Robot”, following its Annies sweep and VES prizes. On the TV side, “Shōgun,” “Squid Game,” “Fallout,” and “The Penguin” were the winners for their production designers in their respective categories.
The Lathrop win for “Nosferatu” was not surprising when you consider that “The Brutalist” production designer Judy Becker is not an ADG member. She has been the presumptive Oscar favorite for channeling Oscar-nominated Adrien Brody’s visionary architect, László Tóth, in applying a Brutalist style to the architectural designs of mid-century Pennsylvania with its bold shapes and function over form aesthetic.
Lathrop, who has worked on all of director Robert Eggers’ other films, received his first Oscar nomination for “Nosferatu.” Lathrop’s work leaned into architectural authenticity of the pre-Victorian, gothic style and recreates a 19th-century German town as well as a 15th-century Romanian castle.
Crowley has yet to win an Oscar, despite seven nominations and a prominent collaboration with Christopher Nolan (“Interstellar”), but is still in the hunt for Oscar glory for his imaginative re-invention of Oz.
Vermette, who previously won the Oscar for “Dune,” is trying for a second win by taking a deeper dive into the Fremen and Harkonnen cultures on Arrakis and Giedi Prime.
In addition, the ADG honored Lisa Frazza (“The Bold and the Beautiful”), Barbara Mesney (“Argo”), Dan Sweetman (“Braveheart”), and J. Dennis Washington (“The Fugitive”) with Lifetime Achievement awards. Legendary production designer Carl Jules Weyl (“The Adventures of Robin Hood” and “Casablanca”) was inducted into the ADG Hall of Fame as part of the ceremony. The 2025 Cinematic Imagery Award was presented to Academy Award-nominated director and filmmaker Jason Reitman, whose body of work includes “Juno,” “Up in the Air,” and “Saturday Night.”
