The animated short "Tontun joulu" (English: The Elf's Christmas) is based on the short story of the same name by Mauri Kunnas, released in a book "Suomalainen tonttukirja" (Otava, 1979) (English: The Book of Finnish Elves). It was the first children's book by Mauri Kunnas. "Tontun joulu" is the first television adaptation of the book "Suomalainen tonttukirja", since the Finnish six-part television series "Tontut" (1978-1979) was released before the book.
