Filming Penitentiary (2018)
*** (out of 4)
Cinematographer Marty Ollstein is interviewed for this nice featurette that takes a look at his work on PENITENTIARY, the 1979 Jamaa Fanaka film. He starts off telling some nice stories about how he got into doing this line of work including his early days with Fanaka. From here we get into the production of this film where he talks about the low budget, the shooting on stock and the various lighting techniques that were used to get a real gritty look on the film. Overall there are some nice stories told and you at least get a good idea of what it was like working on this type of film and using the resources you had to try and make a small film look much bigger than it actually was.
