Netflix has added a trio of unscripted series to its Japanese slate.

Final Draft, Badly in Love and Welcome Now, Get Lost were announced at a Next on Netflix event today, and will sit on a Netflix Japan slate for this year also comprising the likes of Romantics Anonymous, 10Dance and Alice in Borderland Season 3.

Final Draft is billed as Netflix’s first survival reality series and will feature former professional athletes, who seek to knock the others out of the game by competing in a series of near-impossible competitions that take them to the brink. The winner of a 30 million yen prize will use the money to fund a second career. Show is from The Far Eastern TV Entertainment Inc. and the showrunner is Kazuaki Hasimoto.

The Disney film, Moana, may be the absolute last franchise most fans would expect to receive an anime adaptation, but recently, animation artist Gensho Yasuda has translated the adorable story into this format. Studios Xenotoon and Yasuda Studio have masterfully taken the Disney film and added an anime spin that fans of Japanese animation are sure to appreciate deeply.

According to the bio on their website, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, a musical duo known as Barlow & Bear, are the youngest composers in history to write all the songs for an animated Disney film, and the first female writing team to do so, collaborating with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i to craft the sounds of Motunui and beyond. The duo’s first collaboration, “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical” album, won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Disney’s “Moana 2” now showing only in theaters.

“Moana 2” is now in theaters and just like it’s predecessor, it is chock full of original songs.

This time though, Lin-Manuel Miranda isn’t the one who wrote them. That task fell to Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, professionally known as Barlow & Bear, for the sequel. They are the same songwriters responsible for creating “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical,” among others.

Composers and co-songwriters Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i do return for the “Moana 2” soundtrack though, lending a hand in creating the extensive song list.

In Moana 2, the new villain, Matangi, has a past, mysterious connection with Maui, and the creative team has weighed in. The highly anticipated sequel to 2016's Moana continues the adventures of the titular character as she navigates new challenges. While much of the first film focused mostly on Moana's journey, the sequel will introduce more dynamic characters, including Matangi, who has an intriguing and playful rivalry with Maui. Matangi, voiced by Awhimai Fraser, is introduced as a cunning supernatural being who shares centuries of backstory with Dwayne Johnson’s demi-god.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the co-directors of the film, David G. Derrick, Dana Ledoux Miller, and Jason Hand shared some playful insights about the dynamic between Matangi and Maui, saying that their relationship is "open to interpretation." In their own words:

The sequel to 2016’s Oscar-nominated animated musical sees Moana (Auliʻi Cravalho) venturing out on an even-more-dangerous mission – to find a mythical island called Motufetū that has been shrouded by a demigod’s curse. On the heels of the successful original animation, a lot is riding on Moana 2, a sequel that nicely builds on what came before. Moana (Aulii Cravalho) gets a sweet little sister, Simea (Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda), and that personal element really raises the stakes in terms of what the title character is fighting for and who shes trying to get back to. The animation is still strong and the main character beats are affecting, but there are certain aspects of the story namely, the villain and his motivations that stand in the films way of true greatness.

At the end of “Moana,” which came out eight years ago, our plucky Polynesian heroine-who’s-not-a-princess had defeated the giant lava monster Te Kā and returned the heart of Te Fiti, the moss-green goddess of nature. An eager but untested island girl, Moana became a wayfinder, restoring her lush tropical home and discovering, along the way, that her people had always been voyagers. She also bonded with the bickering but insecure refrigerator-bodied hunk demigod Maui, helping to restore his power as well. All in all, she accomplished quite a bit, which may leave you wondering: What’s left for Moana to do in the sequel?

That’s a silly question, of course, since the premise of a movie like “Moana 2” is that a team of screenwriters are going to put their heads together and come up with a whole lot of seismic new saving-the-world hoops for Moana to jump through.

It's hard to overstate the phenomenon that Walt Disney Animation's "Moana" has become since its release in 2016. /Film's own Ethan Anderton gave the first film a whopping 10 out of 10 perfect score, it became the most-streamed movie across any platform in 2023, and it's widely accepted that the music from "Moana" remains some of the best in Lin-Manuel Miranda's oeuvre. Honestly, it's a bit shocking that Disney waited as long as they did to return to the ocean-deep well with a continuation of Moana's story, perhaps even more so that the House of Mouse's original intention was a direct-to-streaming series rather than the theatrical sequel we have today. Fortunately, much like "Frozen II," "The Incredibles 2," and "Toy Story 4," we may not have needed a sequel, but at least the one we got is enjoyable and manages to actually push the story forward.

The track was written by Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, and “encapsulates Moana’s fearless sense of adventure and connecting her island beyond its shores.”

Fans will apparently not be listening to Kanye West’s new album Donda 2 on any streaming platforms. The rapper confirmed he will exclusively debut the music via his Stem Player device before unveiling the album’s 22-song track list on Instagram a few hours later.

West said in a lengthy statement on Instagram that fans should acquire Stem Player, now in its second generation, “to be a part of the revolution.” The Stem Player retails for $200 and allows users to customize tracks by isolating the different instruments and vocals on a song.

When producer Robert Lantos began developing the big-budget historical drama series “Rise of the Raven,” adapting Hungarian author Bán Mór’s series of bestselling novels presented obvious challenges. “It’s an 11-volume novel, each volume being 500-600 pages long,” says Lantos. It took several writers and the better part of a decade to find a way forward, something the producer describes as “finding a creative solution to a jigsaw puzzle.”
