One of the scientific issues with the original series from the 70s was how to account for Newton's 3rd law of action/reaction when firing weapons in space. The first firing of the wave motion gun, the captain stated "Brace for recoil!" This is correct, yet the recoil would be extremely large with a discharge of force that is the wave motion gun. The idea of 'inertial anchors' in this new series helps clear up some of the science and allows for the firing of the wave motion gun without a recoil shock. This is also the second time ever that the wave motion gun is used as a means of propulsion, which never occurred in the original season 1 of the series, and occurred in season 2.
