a film about a family's struggle to survive in Sudan

HALEEMA is a powerful and moving short film about a mother and her two children's quest to survive in the Sudanese desert where water is scarce and the militia is on the prowl. For Westerners like me, HALEEMA makes issues that were abstract when I read about them into vivid, tangible realities. The performances are excellent, particularly that of the caring mother, desperate to help her children, and of the child that plays her young daughter. The cinematography captures the harshness and the beauty of the desert, the score is original and effective, and the editing makes this poetic film move at the right pace. I'm impressed by the writing and the direction.

A must watch epiphany.

Boris's ability to hit the nerves sets him apart from from many a famous director and script writer. Boris used cinema with all its potential to make the world understand about the water scarcity in Sudan and plant the seeds of change. To this day, its music and message cause headaches as they confront the conservative orders of society. Haleema goes several steps further. I feel the National College of Arts or other institutions teaching film studies, will be analyzing this films that carry within them both the analysis of a nation's complication with livelihood necessities as well as a positive vision for the future.
