Eric Draven, which is the name of the fictional middle school Ders attended, is actually the name of the character in the movie, "The Crow." The mascot for the school is also a crow.

When the boys are in the sewer, you can clearly see that are exposed to everything from feces to urine, yet, they seem to be unharmed and have no symptoms of being ill. Highly unlikely, when exposed to such things and even the next show, they seem unharmed by the exposure.
