    The Old Pilot Game

I always feel like I need to comment on the pilot to these series. They all have the same shortcomings. Since this is a sort of comedy/drama we need to be introduced to some wackadoodle plot contrivance. This one has a man who has become known in the FBI as the master of solving white collar crime. He is genial and kind and productive. He is supposedly tenacious. So when the guy whom he spent years hunting down escapes, he lets this guy become his partner because he is a master criminal. And so this apparently goes on for years. I'lll check this one out occasionally but I'm afraid I've just about lost interest already. Make this hardnosed and I would buy it, but the young guy is too much. I won't go into how he gets a place to live but it is ridiculous.

    Give and take

For a show with one of the dullest titles ever created, WC's pilot sparkled, at least in parts. A veteran FBI agent snags his man, a petty thief and con artist. Instead of having the poor guy rot in jail, the agent puts him to work on a case involving an elusive criminal nicknamed Snow White. The agent and con artist have some very lively dialog between them, which makes up for some of the slower scenes. The agent's wife is played by a familiar TV face fro the past, Tiffany Thiessen, and the con artists's new landlady is played by Dihann Carroll. In a few short weeks, MONK will be gone for good. I imagine USA is banking considerably on the success of this show. If the pilot is any indication, I suspect it will work out just fine.

    • Trivia
The pilot was filmed a year before the rest of the series.
    • Goofs
In the opening scene when Neal Caffrey is snipping off his facial hair in a toilet stall, the adhesive-strip base of the stick-on beard is clearly visible. It happens twice - when there is a shot from the side of his upper lip, mouth, cheek and chin (immediately before the close-up of his eye) and when there is a shot from the front of his lips and chin (immediately after the shot of snipped-off hair falling on the water). Both happen within the first twenty seconds, and only seven seconds apart. In the second instance, the edge of the adhesive strip even appears to be partly peeled off.
    • Quotes

Neal Caffrey: [pouting after finding out an attractive agent is a lesbian] Doesn't the FBI have a policy about that?

Peter Burke: That's the military. We don't ask. We don't care.
