Across the Dust

George Nicholson and his son go to a hotel in St Louis wanting to meet Wes Beckett (Lloyd Bridges.)

They are Homesteaders from the east, wanting to take the wagon train through Indian territory to the west. They are dismissively regarded as immigrants by the hotel clerk. George is told St Louis is crawling with them and they are not welcome.

George Nicholson are looking for a scout to take the wagon train to California. They will pay Beckett $200. He is not interested and these days he is just a hunter and trapper.

Beckett tries to get George to turn his wagon train back and head east. It is too dangerous and he is not interested. He reluctantly recommends a Frenchman called Duval. He drinks a lot and turns out to be untrustworthy. Duval steals their money but Beckett manages to get it back.

It emerges Beckett suffered a personal loss, hence why he no longer escorts wagon trains. The prospect of women and children at risk makes him change his mind.

Very much a routine story about a wagon train. Interestingly the widely held view of white folks from back east were seen as immigrants and treated like second class.
