Dan Mathews, mechanic with a badge

A diamond heist goes wrong when a couple - Jack and Sally Baron - lay in wait for a traveling diamond salesman to return to his hotel room and hit him too hard, causing his death. The Barons want to not pull the other two heists they planned because of this, but the ringleader, Pete Madison, insists that they do the other two robberies.

Meanwhile, Highway Patrol has gotten involved with the case. They figure out who has to be behind it based on the fact that the first two companies who had salesman who were robbed are based in the same building, and then look to see who is not at work this week. My title comes from the fact that when Mathews finds the gang's second car stowed by the side of the road, he disables their carburetor so that they can't get away.

It's a solid episode, but there was one aspect that had me scratching my head. From the landscape and the cities often named in the case, it is often assumed the show is taking place in California. Yet the salesmen are all from New York AND they are driving cars they have in New York. Given the fact that the Interstate Highway system was barely up and running at the time, this must have been some feat. They don't build them like they used to.

    • Trivia
Suspect Pete Madison's vehicle is a two-tone 1957 Ford Fairlane 4 door Town Sedan. Sally and Jack Baron are driving a 1958 DeSoto FireFlite Convertible. "FireFlite" can be seen on the driver side tail-fin at approximately 00:24:00 as Dan Mathews is disabling the vehicle.
    • Goofs
During the high-speed chase between Dan Mathews and Pete Madison, one shot clearly shows Dan's patrol car losing its left front hubcap, but the hubcap is back in place in subsequent shots.

      [first lines]

Narrator: Each year, some two million people are arrested on charges ranging from vagrancy to murder; and of these two million, more than fifty percent are found guilty. The Highway Patrol is proud of its record in bringing to justice those who break the law. One Thursday in June, the Highway Patrol ran into one of its most baffling cases: a brutal murder, seemingly without plan or purpose; one whose victim's wallet carried only a single card of identification, curiously designating Henry LaFavre, no relation, to be notified in case of emergency. The Highway Patrol found Roger Wilson in a motel room far distant from his home, and sent for Henry LaFavre in the hope that he could bring some sense to a seemingly wanton killing.
