I couldn't understand why Ward just didn't let Wally borrow his car to take Evelyn to the dance. At his age, surely Wally has his driver's license by now, as his date did, and would be able to drive.
It would have been the easiest solution to just let Wally borrow his dad's car for the evening. Or if Ward wouldn't allow that (which is entirely possible from the short leash both parents keep on these poor boys), Wally could have probably asked Evelyn if he could drive her car to the dance and I'm sure she would have happily obliged.
It all ended well of course but it's odd to me that simply borrowing his dad's car wasn't even an option for Wally. I can't believe at his age he still wouldn't have his driver's license yet. But with such helicopter parents like Ward and June keeping a tight reign on their kids, I wouldn't be surprised if Wally didn't start driving until he was 22 and out of college.

Times change, but a teenager's way of thinking doesn't. Most high school guys want their independence at a certain age. So does Wally.
Hugh Beaumont did a good job directing this episode, as Tony Dow really got into his role and is totally, totally frustrated.
The bottom line; he either goes with a car full of guys with his date to a dance (which Ward and June are against) or have his date drive him(?) -- and become social outcast number one among his male buds, primarily Lumpy. Not a good situation any way you look at it.
After much complaining, Wally caves and has his date drive him in her dad's car... and there's a couple of lessons to be learned. Actually, for Lumpy --who gets a parking ticket. He's not laughing anymore.
Another reason why the show should have took place in Hollywood. All Wally would have to do is hop a bike or skateboard to the dance. That would have been very original and fun.
Popular character actor James Seay plays the girl's father. Seay was a veteran of movies and tv, especially sci fi films, like WAR OF THE WORLDS. Interestingly, right after this role he appeared as a cop in the iconic Bette Davis-Joan Crawford thriller, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO BABY JANE (1962).
A lot of memories here, especially if you had one or two dopey friends you had to impress.
SEASON 5 EPISODE 12 remastered dvd box set. Great color box cover for fans and collectors. If only the series was in color.

(*Ward to Wally quote*) - "Between now and Saturday you better find another way to get to the dance."
I guess that back in 1961 it was considered to be a total disgrace for a teenage boy to be seen being driven to a dance by either his father or his girlfriend (date).
I can't imagine why this would be so - But, here in this episode of TV's "Leave It To Beaver" Wally would sooner croak rather than have this sort of thing happen.
Anyway - As it turns out - Wally has himself a great time at the country club dance where Lumpy Rutherford gets what's coming to him.
