On her sixth studio album, Forever, Lilly Hiatt explores themes of isolation, self-identity, and domestic bliss. Based on that description, you might think you know what it sounds like: quiet, intimate, and replete with sparse acoustic finger-picking and tenderly sung, soul-baring lyrics. While Hiatt has always been an exceptionally vulnerable songwriter, what Forever adds to her repertoire is its unrelenting barrage of brawling guitars, punkish attitude, and hopped-up melodicism. It’s by far Hiatt’s most exhilarating album, as if filling her psyche with ringing, distorted noise was the only way she could think of to crowd out her demons.
Hiatt’s music often gets slapped with the Americana label, but she’s built an eclectic oeuvre that includes a good number of kick-ass rock songs. Forever, though, is her first full-on rock album, and it’s as bracing as a splash of cold water to the face. The sub-...

Fans of The Challenge expressed frustration with the Battle of the Eras final due to its format and a unique twist introduced earlier in the season.
The first part of the final officially began in the recently aired episode End of an Era Part 1, as the eight finalists started onboard the Sinister ship.
The finalists included former winners Johnny Bananas, Jordan Wiseley, Jenny West, Tori Deal, and Rachel Robinson, as well as first-time MTV finalists Kyland Young, Michele Fitzgerald, and Derek Chavez.
Host Tj Lavin introduced them to the various tasks they’d compete in, which included swimming back and forth from the ship to various locations to complete checkpoints.
After each checkpoint, Tj informed the competitors who finished first through fourth place for the men and women.
However, at the start of the final, Tj informed them that castmates had cast Karma votes throughout the season, which would determine who won.

From one 1999 horror remake to another. After rewatching The Haunting with eyes that were both more critical and 25 years older, it got me thinking about the other remake that came out that year. One that was a remake of a far sillier movie and that was the first effort from a new studio, namely Dark Castle Entertainment. The original was from a far less dark castle in that of schlock and gimmick purveyor William Castle and it starred Vincent Price as a man offering strangers money to stay in an allegedly haunted house for a night. While The Haunting failed on multiple levels to improve with age, how does House on Haunted Hill (watch it Here) look after a quarter of a century? Does its cheesy yet graphic tone feel at home in the time of A24 and elevated horror or should it forfeit its 1 million dollar check and leave the cursed grounds forever.

The popularity of Arrowhead Game Studio’s Helldivers 2 is not hidden from anyone. This game is gradually increasing and getting better with every passing day. One thing that’s not happening is that it’s not coming to Xbox consoles anytime soon. Despite a bunch of Xbox owners asking for a port again and again, both developer Arrowhead Game Studios and publisher Sony have chosen not to respond.
As they wait for a response, Xbox owners are no doubt getting restless, and it makes sense too. The game has already been out for more than a month, and there’s no news of Xbox ports anywhere. Hence, these fans have decided to go the other way, finding a similar experience on Xbox itself. And Reddit has responded with three games as the best choices for this purpose.

Helldivers 2 is an incredible game; there’s no doubt about this. This game owes its growing success to a bunch of factors. The fact that this game is so approachable and easy to get into is one of the factors. The fact that its developers are continuously allowing this game to grow in unexpected directions is another. Not only are PlayStation 5 and PC owners loving it, but Xbox owners are also asking for its release on their preferred console.

Joss Ackland, the British actor known for Lethal Weapon 2, Mighty Ducks and White Mischief, has died. He was 95.
Ackland died peacefully of old age, surrounded by his family Sunday morning, his longtime rep and friend Paul Pearson told The Hollywood Reporter. “He was lucid, erudite and mischievous to the end,” the rep added. “I loved him deeply, and, for me, he is the reason we have the word Magnificent in the dictionary.”
The actor was described as a “beloved father,” in a family statement obtained by BBC. It read, “With his distinctive voice and commanding presence, Ackland brought a unique intensity and gravitas to his role. He will be remembered as one of Britain’s most talented and beloved actors.”

Ghost Ship's disturbing opening scene instantly hooks viewers with its shock value, making it more memorable than other horror flicks. Despite conforming to horror clichés, the film keeps audiences glued throughout its runtime with new ways to engage them. Katie's role as a ghost is to help unsuspecting visitors escape from the ship's evil influence, ultimately finding her own eternal peace in the closing scene.
Although Ghost Ship ends on a conclusive note, it leaves an air of mystery surrounding Katie's fate, leaving audiences curious about what might have happened to her. When it comes to critical ratings and box office numbers, Ghost Ship may not rank among the best horror movies that have hit the big screens. Ghost Ship is not based on any specific true stories, although treasure hunters do often search for shipwrecks to pilfer their luxury cargo, providing the perfect trove for those who aren't risk-averse. The allure of sunken treasure and greed is at the heart of Ghost Ship's Faustian tale, as each member makes a pact for riches and ends up hastening their own demise. There are several historical lost ship stories that could have inspired Ghost Ship, such as the H.L. Hunley and the USS Cyclops, adding to the film's authenticity and historical intrigue.
After Ghost Ship opens with a horrifying bloodbath in 1962 aboard the Italian ocean liner Ms Antonia Graza, it follows the crew of a salvage ship as they explore the now derelict vessel, prompting some fans to wonder if the supernatural horror film was based on a true story. The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Vin Diesel might be the name that towers over The Chronicles of Riddick franchise, but it includes many excellent actors whom people forget had anything to do with it. Diesel's break-out role as intergalactic criminal Richard B. Riddick debuted in Pitch Black, a sleeper hit in 2000 that featured a small cast and scope due to budget constraints, but its popularity allowed for an increase to both for its 2004 sequel The Chronicles of Riddick. With more world-building came more recognizable actors, and by the time the third movie Riddick premiered in 2013, it was full of familiar faces who have even more prominent careers today.
With Riddick as the central protagonist, the franchise isn't known for the same cast camaraderie as Diesel's Fast & Furious series, but his lone-wolf personality presents an opportunity for a revolving door of performers with him to interact as he makes his way across the galaxy. Looking...

Thailand’s film censors have upset the release of local horror movie “Hoon Payon,” which should have arrived in cinemas pn Thursday.
The film had a successful world premiere screening on Tuesday at a gala in Bangkok. But censors have since intervened to demand five scenes be cut and to impose a 20+ rating on the Five Star Production picture.
The rating means that spectators must be age 20 or older, thus excluding the film’s key teenage demographic, and it obliges cinema operators to check the ID cards of all patrons.
The film’s story involves a man who travels to a village in a border region where his brother, a novice Buddhist monk, has been accused of murder. As more bodies pile up, the man questions the villagers’ blind faith in a supposedly protective doll or mannequin.
The scenes that have caused offense involve the fictional monk engaging in heated...

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

All eyes are on a nearby university and its resident eccentric, the mysterious Dr. Mallinger, an entomologist with a fascination for Death’s-head moths. His daughter Clare shares his interests but her concerns are more personal than academic—Clare is a shapeshifter, transformed into a deadly butterfly when her blood is up and romance is in the air.

From Nope's gory beginning sequence to Top Gun: Maverick's nostalgic first scene, movie fans have been treated to some memorable openings this year. Although both of those movies managed to maintain the level of quality throughout, not every movie can make that claim.
Whilst some movies, including famously the James Bond series, often begin with huge action set-pieces that go so all-out that it's impossible to meet that level again, some movies just disappoint because a solid opening gives way to a poor movie overall. These are the movies that Reddit believes peaked a little too early.

Before the SnyderVerse, Zack Snyder was one of Warner Bros’ most prominent directors, with him having helmed the wildly successful 300 and Watchmen. While the latter of these two movies didn’t set the world on fire in terms of box office, it still did perfectly decent business, and for his follow-up, Snyder was given a lot of latitude to make what would be his first film based on an original concept, Sucker Punch. The story of a group of female mental patients who enter a fantasy world, the film was met with pretty dismal box office by Snyder’s standards. Critics had a field day with his fantasy epic, and fans mostly dismissed it as a weaker effort for the director.
While Sucker Punch was quickly forgotten once Snyder made Man of Steel and launched his ill-fated DC SnyderVerse, the movie has eked out a bit of a following...

Twenty years ago today, Ghost Ship sailed into theaters and unleashed an unforgettable opening sequence that instantly entered the annals of all-time great cold opens. The stylish introduction ends with an unexpected shock and an insanely high body count. Perhaps it was a bit too effective; that high kill count quickly slows down once Ghost Ship jumps ahead to the present.
No matter the film that followed, this cold open deserves its place among horror’s best opening sequences.
The Steve Beck-directed horror movie was the third release under the genre label Dark Castle Entertainment and his sophomore feature follow-up to 2001’s Th13teen Ghosts. Released in theaters on October 25, 2002, Ghost Ship followed a salvage crew seeking riches from a long-missing Italian cruise ship, the Ms Antonia Graza, only to discover its haunted past shortly after boarding.
The cold open teases some harrowing events that led to the ocean liner’s disappearance forty years ago.

Chile’s Santiago International Film Festival (Sanfic) has unveiled the full list of films participating in its upcoming Labs for fiction and documentary features, running under the festival’s Sanfic Industria banner Oct. 27-Nov. 5.
It’s the second such event hosted by the fest this year, although the first to welcome participants in person. In March, a entirely online Industria event was held, where Brazil’s “The Life That’s Left,” Costa Rica’s “Crono-Capsulas” and Chilean drama series “Silver Bridge” and “La Vida de Nosotras” highlighted the field of exciting projects.
“It is not easy to host two industry spaces in the same year and host new productions as powerful as those we will have in this edition, only seven months after our 100% online event,” Industria head Gabriela Sandoval explained to Variety.
Fifteen fiction features will participate in this fall’s – or spring’s if you’re in Chile – lab.

The 2000s were lousy with remakes, some of them good, many of them lousy. Major horror franchises from the 1980s got a makeover; subversive ‘70s horror films received a glossy new coat of paint. One of the best of these remakes – and one which has finally begun getting its due over the last decade, building a cult audience and culminating in a new special edition Blu-ray – is House of Wax from 2005. It reimagines the 1953 Vincent Price classic (itself a remake of 1933’s Mystery of the Wax Museum) for a modern audience: gorier, sexier, and considerably more twisted. I’m certainly not the first to say it, but it’s more a remake of 1979’s underrated Tourist Trap than it is of House of Wax. As a remake of Tourist Trap, it’s pretty fantastic.
