Yam yeung lo 10: Suen yin jau

Number ten in the Troublesome Night series is a doozy. The movie, like certain horror comedies from Hong Kong, has a ghost-themed story but the plot itself is consumed with unfunny comedic fillers. Series regular Wayne Lai plays the boss of a trading company who takes his staff on vacation to Cheung Chau, an island notorious for suicides and hauntings. But, the movie unfortunately doesn't focus on that theme, rather, just focuses on the co-worker group moping around the island, whining about how bored they were and trying to find stuff to occupy their time.

Real ghost action doesn't take place until the end of the movie, where Bud Lung (Lan Law) finally appears to conduct an exorcism against Yee (Sherming Yiu), the lady ghost who has been meddling with Wayne Lai's character.

Yiu makes a lovely ghost character, but unfortunately, she doesn't really take center stage in the movie. Didn't know what the filmmakers were thinking as this was supposed to be a horror film in a long-running ghost trilogy but, instead, they decided to center the movie around a bunch of young co-workers played by no-name actors who couldn't act to save their lives. The two young girl characters were OK and gave a good effort, but they guy characters were quite awful, especially that of the excruciatingly whiny, nit-picky and overacting Pong (Wong Ting Pong). Bud Gay (Ka Fai Tong), who was first introduced in Troublesome Night 8, is one of the main characters and would, unfortunately, take on main roles in the remaining Troublesome Night movies.

I've find myself watching this movie a number of times just because I needed to fill some void time. I've seen movies worse than this but this film really showed that it was short-budgeted. Sherming Yiu and Lan Law were the film's only redeeming qualities.

In Troublesome Night 8, we briefly see Bud Gay in his office at a trading company. This time around, the story concerns Gay and his co-workers as their boss (Wayne Lai) takes them on a holiday to Cheung Chau, which conveniently for this supernatural series, is not only a holiday resort but a common suicide spot. There they meet a ghost woman who was in a suicide pact with her lover because his family refused to let them marry. Unfortunately, almost the entire film is the co-workers hanging out on the island saying, "I'm bored. There's nothing to do here." They are so right. Law Lan finally shows up for the exorcism, though there isn't much reason to wait for it.
