Mary and D.W., as people knew them before their most famous works

    D. W. Griffith is now best known as the director of "The Birth of a Nation" (one of the most infamous movies ever made). Mary Pickford is known as the co-founder (with Douglas Fairbanks and Charlie Chaplin) of United Artists.

I was surprised to learn that before these, the two of them collaborated on a short film. "The Unwelcome Guest" depicts a man who goes to work for a family, and in the process develops a relationship with the servant girl (whom they call the slavey). Griffith would also portray hardship in 1916's "Intolerance"; that he repeatedly focused on this topic makes it all the more ironic that he made "The Birth of a Nation". All in all, I don't know if I would call this a masterpiece - it's too short to have a truly profound impact - but I like that he addressed the issue. Available on YouTube.

    Drawn with assurance and imagination

It is the characterization and the good acting that gives this picture a high place among the offerings of today. The "unwelcome guest" is the father who is poor and too old to look out for himself, so is brought to the son's home to work with the slavey and is half starved. These two characters (taken by W. Christie Miller and "Little Mary'') are the center of the picture's interest and, especially the former, are drawn with assurance and imagination. It is an offering with a good deal of punch and held the audience's attention strongly. The photography is of excellent quality. - The Moving Picture World, March 29, 1913
