Graduated from an old-language humanistic high school in Berlin; scholarship holder of the Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes.
Completed studies in mathematics (diploma; Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) and physics (doctorate, habilitation; Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin); active in research and teaching in theoretical physics at universities in Berlin (Humboldt-Universität) and Munich (Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität), where he held a temporary professorship (chair deputy for several years). Further research activities at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton, USA) and with the support of the German Research Foundation.
Completed studies in music; worked as composer, répétiteur (Berlin University of the Arts) and director of music theater ensembles.
Completed studies in church music; many years of work as a church musician.
