He attended a high school, where he acted as a student representative and met his classmate Hella von Sinnen. After graduating from high school, Domian began studying German, philosophy and political science at the University of Cologne. During his studies he worked as a cable man for television. This first contact with the media proved to be lasting. Domian appeared as a presenter for the first time in the live broadcast "Blue Monday", replacing Chris Howland. Domian completed journalistic training at WDR and Deutschlandfunk in the 1980s. He also organized talk shows in Cologne cafés, which he moderated himself and for which he was able to attract prominent personalities such as Elke Heidenreich, Jürgen von der Lippe and Dagmar Berghoff.
In 1990, the WDR radio took over Domian as a permanent editor, who from 1993 moderated the talk show "Hot Number" in the WDR 1 youth program. In April 1995, WDR 1 was converted into youth radio "Eins Live", in which Domian now received a daily broadcast slot with his "Talk Radio". The program that bears his name was also broadcast on WDR television. In the bimedia night talk program "Domian", interested audiences can contact the presenter free of charge by telephone. While a specific topic of conversation is given for the night from Thursday to Friday, callers can comment on a topic of their choice on the other nights, usually personal concerns or social problems. During its almost 10-year broadcast period, Domian's telephone talk show has developed into one of the most popular radio programs, whose TV broadcast late at night (1-2 hours) can mobilize up to 220,000 viewers.
During the broadcast, 40,000-60,000 listeners try to call, only a fraction of whom get through. The problems and topics discussed during the program in personal conversations with the callers are sometimes of an existential nature and of an explosive or tragic nature. The moderator is therefore supported by a psychologist who can offer the callers further assistance if necessary. Domian was awarded the Medal of Merit of the Federal Order of Merit at the beginning of 2003 because he does valuable social work through his mission. At the end of October 2004, Domian started an additional celebrity edition on Saturday evening, in which a well-known personality has since answered questions from the moderator and audience.
