Late night TV star and former SNL regular Jimmy Fallon made his Broadway debut last night, even if it won’t be particularly a long-running gig. Fallon will do eight performances of All In: Comedy About Love, Simon Rich’s episodic tales of love that features an ever-evolving cast week after week.
The late-night talk show took his spot last night alongside Lin-Manuel Miranda, Aidy Bryant, Fallon and Nick Kroll; that group performs, sans Miranda, wrap up on February 2. (Miranda hangs around until February 16).
Proving one of the more popular, and unusual, productions of the winter Broadway season, All In began performances at Broadway’s Hudson Theatre on December 11, with a revolving cast that has included John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry and Richard Kind.
Other performances taking their turns before the production closes February 16 have been Chloe Fineman and Andrew Rannells, with Nick Kroll, David Cross, Annaleigh Ashford,...

It could practically be its own subgenre by now – the low-cost indie that gets maximum production value out of being set completely in a cabin in the woods. It’s an isolated location with a limited cast where anything can happen and the characters, left to their own devices (and usually without cell phone service), can indulge in pages and pages of budget-friendly dialogue. Maybe there’s a supernatural element or suspense undertones. Add a point if there’s a reference to Sam Raimi’s “Evil Dead” series, perhaps the ultimate cheap cabin-in-the-woods franchise.
You get that the filmmaking team behind “Oh, Hi!,” an endlessly charming romantic comedy that just premiered at Sundance, knows how embedded the cliches of a cabin-in-the-woods indie can be. It zigs where you think it’ll zag, weaponizing that knowledge and using it to subvert expectations. It constantly keeps you on your toes in a way that feels refreshing,...

David Cross is a man of discerning cinematic taste, as evidenced by the time he sacrificed a $150,000 bonus just to warn all of America not to see his newest movie, Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked.
On the latest episode of his podcast, Senses Working Overtime with David Cross, the Arrested Development star chatted with Nick Kroll, and a not insignificant portion of their conversation was about movies.
“I have been in some good movies. I’ve also been in some shit movies,” Cross confessed while somehow resisting the urge to dunk on Chipwrecked again. Although he did admit that most of the films he’s made are actually pretty good. Like how he played Allen Ginsberg in the Bob Dylan-inspired I’m Not There. And also Allen Ginsberg’s father in the Daniel Radcliffe movie Kill Your Darlings.

Last week, the Broadway play All In: Comedy About Love got very dramatic about money – weekly box office, specifically, with grosses topping $1 million, an impressive feat for any play not named Mary. Figure in that All In isn’t really a play at all, but a collection of readings by the short comic fiction writer Simon Rich and I thought the box office tally seemed something akin to a Christmas miracle.
Then I actually saw All In, and count me among the Rich converts. Directed by the ever nimble Alex Timbers and performed by a rotating cast of four actors – I was lucky to get the truly excellent John Mulaney, Fred Armisen, Renée Elise Goldsberry, and Richard Kind – the 90-minute All In is a perfect holiday snickerdoodle, a light and tasty snack no less funny for its brevity and lack of splashy production values.

There have been plenty of great sci-fi comedies in the last decade, from underrated gems to award winners and summer blockbusters. Sci-fi comedies are often best when they balance their two genres well. Movies like Back to the Future and Men in Black, for example, have thrilling stories and intriguing sci-fi concepts, as well as great jokes and strong comedic performances.
In the last 10 years, sci-fi comedies have been used to lovingly poke fun at the genre, but sci-fi has also been used as a guise to facilitate plenty of social commentary and satire. Movies like Sorry to Bother You, Palm Springs and The Lobster all use sci-fi concepts to show how unusual everyday life has become for people in the here and now. Other sci-fi comedies have used humor to lighten up some cerebral stories that could otherwise be too dystopian and depressing.

Live from New York ... it's Broadway. Former Saturday Night Live writer Simon Rich has a new Broadway play, and he's brought in some of the show's biggest stars from past and present.
Rich spent four years as a writer on Saturday Night Live, joining the staff in 2007. He frequently collaborated with John Mulaney, writing elaborate premise-based sketches that often found their audience after "Weekend Update" when more experimental material got a chance to shine.
Now, Rich is taking his talents to broadway with All In: Comedy About Love. The play takes Rich's short stories about dating, marriage, and heartbreak and has some of his comedian friends read the stories out loud.
All In will run between December 18 and February 16 at the Hudson Theater in New York City. Performances will feature a rotating cast of four actors, several of whom have connections to Saturday Night Live.

Note: The following story contains spoilers from “What We Do in the Shadows” Season 6, Episode 9.
From its first season, “What We Do in the Shadows” has been a show unafraid to cheekily drop big names, especially if the actors in question have a vampire on their IMDb page. And in its final season, the FX comedy embraced its chaotic, star-studded side once more.
“Come Out and Play” once again finds the Staten Island crew among the many, many, many throngs of vampires that inhabit New York, from the Meatpacking hotties to the aspiring artist vampires who have to hold down day jobs as baristas. But there’s one especially tall, pale and questioning vamp that may have caught viewers’ eyes. Here’s your guide to the “True Blood” star who’s casually in this latest season.

For comedy legend David Cross, starring in three films for the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise was a supposedly fun thing he’ll never do again.
When the Mr. Show star and co-creator first signed on for a half-live-action, half-animated film featuring the novelty song sensations Alvin and the Chipmunks, he earned significant ridicule from the ironic Gen-x alt-comedy scene that he was supposed to represent respectfully in the mainstream. In a blog post, Patton Oswalt claimed that 20th Century Fox offered both him and Brian Posehn the role of the greedy Jett Records executive Ian Hawke in the 2007 movie Alvin and the Chipmunks, but “we both threw the script across the room in disgust. David Cross caught it.”
Well, two Alvin and the Chipmunks movies later, the disgust caught up to Cross, as he would go on to describe the making of the tropical 2011 sequel film Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked...

Henry Cavill seems to be verse-jumping as he was recently seen in DC’s rival franchise, the MCU’s Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor had a small cameo as a Wolverine variant a.k.a The Cavillrine in Deadpool & Wolverine. This came after his exit as Superman from the Dceu after James Gunn took over and chose to go with a new actor instead.
Cavill has headlined The Witcher, starred in Mission Impossible: Fallout, and has played Sherlock Holmes, making him a franchise-favorite actor. While the James Bond role seems to be elusive to him, the actor had expressed interest in being a part of another legendary franchise, provided a new film met his expectations.

The nepo baby discourse as it pertains to the arts is typically a grievance-driven undertaking that allows low- to no-talent individuals the opportunity to blame someone other than themselves for their lack of success. Though there have been instances of celebrity-adjacent people receiving seemingly undeserved gigs, these are usually one-and-not-too-many-more-done deals undone by the recipient's profound absence of skill.

David Cross' movies and TV shows have proven he is one of the best comedy actors over the last three decades. Cross began his career in entertainment as a stand-up comedian. He got his first gigs when he was 17 and then moved to New York City the day after he graduated from high school to try to pick up bigger opportunities. It was in the early 1990s that Cross finally picked up some attention when he moved to Los Angeles and joined the emerging comedy club scene there.

Even weeks after the series finale's debut on Netflix, The Umbrella Academy season 4's Eiffel Tower plot hole is really bothering me. It's worth pointing out that I think Umbrella Academy's ending had a lot of problems. After a lot of time-hopping, intricately woven setup, there was very little pay off in the rushed, six-episode final outing. Season 4 takes place in the reset Umbrella Academy timeline the one the Hargreeves siblings made in season 3's conclusion. While the siblings lead mundane lives, a cult called The Keepers is gathering evidence of the existence of other timelines.
The Keepers' conspiracy theory hinges on the artifacts they collect objects, from newspaper clippings to Umbrella Academy-themed merchandise, that could only exist in another timeline. Although I found The Keepers' so-called "Umbrella Effect" compelling, the show's focus on shoehorning in Umbrella Academy Easter eggs might have led to the frustrating Eiffel Tower plot hole.

Created by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld, the show About Nothing was loved by everyone and it made the careers of Jerry Seinfeld who played himself, Julia Louis-Dreyfus who played Elaine Benes, and Jason Alexander who played the universally loved George. The series mostly followed four people hanging out and going on weird and absurdly comedic adventures. So, if you miss the hilarious comedy, unconventional but relatable characters, and timeless stories in Seinfeld, here are some similar shows you should check out next.

Although A24s Y2K has an original premise, the upcoming horror comedy also owes a creative debt to a more family-friendly spin on the same idea. It is pretty easy to work out the creative origins of A24s upcoming horror comedy Y2K. Y2K follows a pair of likable, nerdy teens who attend a booze-fueled party on New Years Eve 1999. In this movies reality, Y2Ks Millennium Bug turns out to be a very real fear as electronics all over the world go maliciously haywire at the stroke of midnight and begin massacring humans.
What follows is a classic genre mashup that blends a One Wild Night teen comedy with an apocalyptic horror. Y2K is effectively a horror version of Superbad, or an unlikely mashup of Cant Hardly Wait and Miracle Mile. While taking the robotic apocalypse of The Terminator movies and transplanting it into the world of Harold and...

Film fans were shaken earlier this year with the immensely sad news of actor Carl Weathers’ passing. The star had been a cultural icon thanks to his immaculate portrayal of Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies, as well as his run of action roles in films like Predator and Action Jackson. Weathers had recently been seen as a regular cast member in the Disney+ Star Wars series The Mandalorian. On August 29, the actor has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Variety reports on his former co-stars, including Sylvester Stallone and Adam Sandler, paying tribute to Weathers. In February, after the news broke of Weathers’ passing, his Rocky co-star Sylvester Stallone posted a video recalling what it was like to work with him. In his tribute, Sly stated, “He showed up at the eleventh hour with all the attributes: the body, the skill, the soul and the acting chops.

Without Chubbs Peterson, Happy Gilmore could never have become a golf champion, but without Adam Sandler, the late Carl Weathers’ Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony would feel incomplete.
On February 2, 2024, Weathers passed away at the age of 76 after a battle with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. In the following weeks, seemingly the entire entertainment industry took turns eulogizing the brawny, macho, mustachioed action star and former NFL player, but for all the mentions of Apollo Creed, Predator and Weathers’ contributions in the Star Wars universe, perhaps the most underappreciated aspect of Weathers’ career in the days following his death was his impeccable comedic acting ability, as demonstrated in films like Sandler’s Happy Gilmore.
Today, the Hollywood Walk of Fame will honor Weathers with a posthumous star placed on its iconic sidewalk stretch, and many of Weathers’ old co-stars and collaborators have submitted tribute videos for the ceremony as they remotely pay...

Carl Weathers was an unknown actor on a cattle call audition for a movie when he was introduced to the screenwriter — also a struggling nobody — and was told to do the scene with him. The writer mumbled his way through the lines and afterwards, Weathers, nervous that he blew his shot, blurted out, “If you get me a real actor, I could do a lot better.”
Turns out the writer was the actor. But fortunately, Sylvester Stallone was not insulted, and Weathers got the role of Apollo Creed, changing movie history, and his life, forever.
“He showed up at the eleventh hour with all the attributes: the body, the skill, the soul and the acting chops,” Stallone said in a video tribute after Weathers’ death in February at the age of 76. “I never could have accomplished what we did with ‘Rocky’ without him. He was magic.”

As I sat down to watch the fourth and final season of The Umbrella Academy, I found myself wondering: where, when, and how did things leave off in the season 3 finale? If you're like me, watching that recap before the season begins was incredibly crucial, and the reminder got me hyped for what would be a fitting end to a show that dealt with multiple apocalypses, strange and wild characters, and a family unlike any other.
While sitting down to watch the final season, I was reminded that the Hargreeves clan ended season 3 on a rather interesting note. Daddy Hargreeves (Colm Feore), or some version of him anyway, attempted to obliterate all the Hargreeves children (and did technically kill one of them) after reneging on a plan he made with Allison (Emmy Raver-Lampman). After seemingly betraying her family, Allison stepped in and made a decision that would shake the familiy to its core.

For fans of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix's offbeat superhero show based on the comic book of the same name, we come bearing good news and bad news. The good news is that it's finally returning after over two years with a new season, but the only catch is that this marks the show's conclusion. The Umbrella Academy follows the Hargreeves family, adopted siblings with powers who, each season, must band together to save the world from the impending apocalypse and other threats.
With a strong cast, quirky storytelling, and an awesome soundtrack, it's no surprise The Umbrella Academy has been a staple for the streamer. Though the third season, which was released in June 2022, didn't live up to my expectations, I'm still excited about the fourth. I'm eager to see how the writers will tie up the storylines — especially after the timeline reset at the end of season 3 — and...

August is off to a great start with its streaming options, and we're so here for it! I'm personally most excited to start watching The Umbrella Academy season 4, especially since it's the last season of the show on Netflix. And we've also got some reality drama headed our way with the release of Dance Moms: A New Era.
If you've been enjoying Sunny and the sci-fi adventure Time Bandits on Apple TV+, you'll be happy to learn that new episodes are coming this week! There's plenty more to look forward to as well this week. We shared them all below.

Emily is still in Paris, Zack Snyder unleashes his latest “Snyder Cuts,” the Hargreeves children have to save the world one more time, the Terminator goes animated and a host of AMC gems are among the highlights of a busy month of new releases on Netflix.
On Aug. 1, the six-part mystery series A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder debuts on Netflix. In the show, Wednesday star Emma Myers (with a solid British accent!) plays a teenage gumshoe who gets to the bottom of a homicide case years earlier in a small English village in this adaptation of Holly Jackson’s popular YA novel. Created by Poppy Cogan the show has Miss Marple vibes and also stars Zain Iqbal, Asha Banks, Mathew Baynton, Gary Beadle and Anna Maxwell Martin.
Hoping to repeat the “Snyder Cut” magic on Aug. 2, Netflix releases director’s cut versions of Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon – Part...

Among the films playing at this year’s prestigious Venice Film Festival is a documentary called From Darkness to Light, all about Jerry Lewis’ notorious 1972 Holocaust-set dramedy The Day the Clown Cried. The film was famously never released to the public, who, to be fair, weren’t exactly clamoring for a movie in which the guy from The Nutty Professor plays a circus clown who ushers children into the gas chambers.
Lewis’ directorial catastrophe has become the stuff of legend. Hardly any footage has ever surfaced online, and reports that The Day the Clown Cried would be screened by the Library of Congress last month turned out to be false.
But despite its pop-cultural infamy, this cursed project came close to being remade with another slapstick comedian with a reputation for being a huge asshole: Chevy Chase.
This info comes from the great Patton Oswalt, who, back in 1997, managed to...
