The movie Virus did not officially scuttle across screens until 1999, but its biomechanical horrors first sprang to life a bit earlier. The road to screen adaptation was not straightforward for Navy Seal turned writer Chuck Pfarrer; he first pitched his high concept to Universal Pictures, only to then have it land at Dark Horse Comics. Upon the series’ success, Pfarrer tried his luck again with Universal. This time, though, producer Gale Anne Hurd was there to help get Virus optioned as well as find a potential director.
It was in 1995 that Universal first approached John Bruno about helming Virus. Initially, the visual effects artist was hesitant about directing a feature, and Pfarrer’s screenplay was a major factor in that uncertainty; he found it to be too dense and complicated for his liking. Yet after a talk with colleague and friend James Cameron, Bruno eventually accepted the offer, providing that...

When we think of Mark Harmon, the image that instantly comes to our mind is his portrayal of the stoic and sharp-witted Leroy Jethro Gibs on NCIS. The cornerstone of one of television’s longest-running TV shows and most beloved crime drama, Harmon is best known for his effortless on-screen charm and nuanced portrayals.

Hollywood has seen its fair share of feuds, but few can rival the fiery clash between Sharon Stone and Billy Baldwin. Behind the scenes, this rift was born from both personal and professional tensions. Like a movie script gone wrong, the conflict simmered for years before reaching the boiling point.

The roots of their dispute stretch back to 1993, when both actors starred in Sliver, a film directed by Phillip Noyce. Known for its steamy scenes and intensity, the thriller was as much about the drama off-camera as it was on.
But what really fueled the fire was a shocking suggestion from Sliver’s producer, Robert Evans. But the story doesn’t end with Stone’s words. Enter Daniel Baldwin, Billy’s brother, who took to The Tonight Show to air his grievances about Sharon Stone’s alleged unprofessional behavior during the film’s production.

“Americans With No Address” director/producer Julia Verdin wanted her documentary to put to rest a common misconception about people who are homeless. “We wanted to show the spectrum of the different types of individuals that ended up on the streets,” she said during a recent conversation with TheWrap’s Joe McGovern. “Because one thing that struck me and one of the reasons why I wanted to make this is that there’s a general perception that everybody on the streets are drug addicts or have mental issues. And that is just not true. There are a lot of regular people on the streets who, just through bad circumstances, [like] not being able to keep up with the rent, have ended up there.”
For the conversation, which followed a virtual showing of the film as part of TheWrap Screening Series, Verdin was joined by “Americans With No Address” narrator William Baldwin and featured talent Xander Berkeley.

War of the Worlds: Extinction is a followup to The Asylum’s 2021 film War of the Worlds: Annihilation, but in the opening montage, however, the film flips the script entirely, revealing that rather than Earth being invaded it was us doing the invading, attacking and trying to colonize the planet Emios after we made Earth uninhabitable.
Almost immediately after that montage, we see the one returning character, General Skuller leading his troops against the Earth forces, apparently in defiance of orders to stand down and welcome what are referred to as refugees from Earth. Any chance of that happening vanishes when he sees his daughter vaporized by an enemy craft while trying to lead some of those refugees to safety.

2004 was a notable year for television viewers. “Friends” wrapped up its 10-year run; Ken Jennings had his first winning streak on “Jeopardy!”; Illinois senator Barack Obama made a splash with a keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention; new series “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” became obsessions. And the news was constantly filled with stories from the Iraq war.

Some gritty action films from the 1990s are worth revisiting as many of them have slowly begun to slip from the minds of the general public in recent years. The '90s introduced some of the most influential action films, like Total Recall, Heat, and The Matrix. Such films have taken over pop culture discussions, leaving gritty action films like Crimson Tide and New Jack City to take the back seat.
Gritty action films from the decade show a darker side to criminal activity, such as drug trading and arson. Some films like Desperado have a comedic approach to the dark material, while films like New Jack City aim to incorporate social commentary into their narrative. Though they were moderate successes at the time of their release and weren't torn apart by critics, certain '90s action films aren't as heavily discussed and merit a rewatch.

This post contains spoilers for "Vanilla Sky."
Cameron Crowe's bafflingly convoluted yet intriguing "Vanilla Sky" opens with affluent businessman David Aames (Tom Cruise) in prison. Donning a prosthetic mask to hide his supposed facial disfigurement, David is initially reluctant to open up to court psychologist Dr. Curtis McCabe (Kurt Russell), only to end up recounting the events that led up to his arrest and confinement in prison. The narrative structure of the film unwinds like a labyrinth with no exits, mirroring David's inexplicable brush with strange visions that overlap and shift around to create unreliable memories -- that is, until the last 10 minutes introduces a twist that renders everything crystal clear.
Lucid dreams and cryonic suspensions emerge as a part of David's reality, revealing that a chunk of his experiences are products of his muddled subconscious, including McCabe, whose insistent proclamations of being "real" start to feel hollow with every step David takes.

David Cronenberg's influence has shaped the modern horror landscape, blending metaphysical and physical elements for provocative storytelling. Cronenberg's impact on body horror is evident in films like American Mary, Slither, and Kuso, pushing boundaries with grotesque transformations. Newer films like Censor and Possessor continue Cronenberg's legacy, exploring themes of anatomy, self-transformation, and the blurred lines between reality and fiction.
The modern horror landscape wouldnt look the same without the influence of body horror maestro David Cronenberg. Since his debut, Shivers, a sticky satire about an apartment complex infected with an erotic virus clearly meant to critique the sexual revolution, his work has provoked by combining metaphysical with the very-physical on screen, plumbing the depths of the human animals urges by testing its boundaries, usually proving them much too porous for comfort, from The Fly to The Brood, to Videodrome.
The once-polarizing Cronenberg has become an elder statesman in horror over the years.

Back in 1990, director Joel Schumacher teamed with screenwriter Peter Filardi to bring us the psychological horror film Flatliners, a movie that was memorable enough to receive a forgettable reboot in 2017. Filardi recently regained the rights to his original screenplay – and Deadline reports that he has given author J.D. Barker the chance to write a novel called Flatliners Resurrection, which is based on Filardi’s script but puts a new twist on the concept.
The film has the following synopsis: Seeking answers about the afterlife, Chicago medical student Nelson persuades his fellow pupils to help him end his life, and then resuscitate him in the nick of time. Atheist David, playboy Joe, and troubled Rachel also journey into the unknown, looking for meaning in their own lives. In the wake of the original 1990 movie and the largely forgotten 2017 remake, the Flatliners saga will continue with Flatliners Resurrection, a new novel that’s currently in the works.
According to Deadline’s exclusive report this morning, the upcoming novel will be penned by J.D. Barker (Dracul), and it puts a fresh twist on the original Flatliners screenplay.
Deadline explains, “The original [movie] was released by Columbia, but Barker said that scribe Peter Filardi got back the rights to his original script, and the author swayed the scribe with a twist to the original tale that takes the reanimation tale down a different road than the original or a later remake. The novel is based on that script, not the movie, and Intellectual Property Group’s Joel Gotler will broker both the publishing and screen rights.”
“We’re thrilled to have J.D. Barker on board for this project,” said Filardi.

Have you got any salt handy? You may want to take a pinch of it for this one. Following recent star turns in Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and buzzy summer disaster movie blockbuster Twisters, it would be fair to say that Glen Powell is very hot right now. But he could be about to get hotter — quite literally. In a recent interview with CNBC posted to the broadcaster's YouTube channel, Imagine Entertainment co-founder Brian Grazer said not once, but twice, that a remake of Ron Howard's 1991 firefighting classic Backdraft is in the works, with none other than Powell set to star. Check out the interview clip below (feel free to scrub through to 1:20 and 2:20);
Now, as we say, some salt-pinching is required at this stage because neither Powell nor original Backdraft director Howard are on the record as saying this film is happening just yet.

Ron Howard is reportedly developing a sequel to the 1991 hit film Backdraft, and Glen Powell is said to be considering joining up.
Here’s an interesting story which suggests that Backdraft, the 1991 firefighting drama may be getting a sequel. Well, another sequel that is given that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment released a direct-to-video follow-up in 2019. Given that Ron Howard’s production company are involved this time though, we’d imagine that should this come to fruition, this one would be a proper bells and whistles sequel with a sizeable budget and lots of movie stars.
One movie star whose name was almost certain to pop up was that of Glen Powell.
He’s the man of the moment right now and he’s not averse to putting in a turn in legacy follow-ups either. Powell is currently appearing in Twisters, a loose follow-up to the 1996 film, Twister. He’s also...

Any regular theme park attendee probably has a list of their favorite roller coasters and rides (and maybe a go-to churro stand or two). But what about the hyper-specific category of special effects shows? Live stunt shows don't count, because those are too well-known. Instead, we're talking about more obscure attractions, the ones people might wander into on a whim between waiting in line for the park's ultra-popular rides.
In these special effects shows, most of which have since been closed down or revamped into other attractions altogether, park visitors were essentially herded into a controlled area to witness some kind of bombastic demonstration. Younger visitors may not even remember these, but they experienced their heyday in the 1990s, and were often based on a popular movie from the time.

Younger visitors may not even remember these, but they experienced their heyday in the 1990s, and were often based on a popular movie from the time.

You know, in some film circles, Ron Howard gets a lot of guff for being a "boring" director. But I think that's unfair. Sure, Howard has some duds in his directorial career, but he also has some home runs. "Apollo 13" is an exciting "based on a true story" flick, "The Paper" is a nifty look at the world of newspaper journalism, the underrated "Cinderella Man" is a stellar boxing drama. And then there's "Backdraft," Howard's 1991 thriller about firefighters. To be fair, the "Backdraft" script is a bit weak, but the film itself is action-packed and boasts some incredible visual effects that use real fire. The film also has a killer cast, including Robert De Niro, the late, great Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.T. Walsh, Scott Glenn, and, of course, Kurt Russell.
Russell plays Lieutenant Stephen "Bull" McCaffrey, a really cool guy who is also a damn good firefighter.

William Baldwin starred in three projects with Donald Sutherland, the Emmy- and honorary Oscar-winning actor who died Thursday at age 88 after a seven-decade Hollywood career.
Below, he shares his thoughts on Sutherland, his co-star in Ron Howard’s Backdraft, Universal’s Virus and the ABC series Dirty, Sexy, Money.
I have the honor and pleasure of working with Donald Sutherland on three occasions.
The first was when he so brilliantly portrayed the deranged, psychopathic arsonist Ronald in Ron Howard’s Backdraft.
The second was 20 weeks on the Universal sci-fi thriller Virus with Jamie Lee Curtis.
The third, and by far my favorite, was when he played my father and patriarch of the Darling family, Tripp Darling, on the short-lived but wonderful ABC hit Dirty, Sexy, Money.
Donald was a complex, complicated and quirky man in the most delicious way. He had a gentle, childlike boyish streak in him that I absolutely adored.

Billy Ray called him “a prince.” Kiefer Sutherland said his dad was “never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly.” Horror filmmaker Joe Russo simply wrote, “Rip to the Goat.”
Hollywood is sounding off on the death of Donald Sutherland, the 2017 recipient of an Honorary Oscar who died Thursday in Miami at 88. Stars such as Michael Douglass and Rachel Zegler have responded to the news as well.
Sutherland played key parts in films like Ordinary People (1980), Pride & Prejudice (2005) and The Hunger Games quartet of films based on the books by Suzanne Collins. He was also a staple of Robert Altman’s Mash in the role of Hawkeye Pierce.
“I never had the honor of knowing him personally, but it was the honor of a lifetime to follow in his footsteps,” Tom Blyth, who portrayed a younger version of Sutherland’s Hunger Games character in a prequel film, wrote on Instagram.

Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man receives less fan love than these superheroes in the MCU. When fans were asked to poll on the best superhero trilogy in the MCU, most of them chose Chris Evans’ Captain America trilogy and James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy. While the first Iron Man film remains one of the best films in the 30 billion-dollar franchise, Downey Jr.’s third film had unfavorable opinions, which made it many people’s third favorite trilogy.

Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Jr., and Keanu Reeves are three of the most prominent stars in Hollywood. Pitt was at the beginning of his career giving fans acclaimed movies like Thelma & Louise in 1991 but the actor lost a movie role he wanted in the same year and it also happened to Downey Jr. and Reeves.

The impact of losing the role upon all three stars may seem insignificant considering their remarkable cinematic career but the loss of a movie may hit hard. After their horrible auditions for Ron Howard’s Backdraft, the trio lost the role to William Baldwin. The movie could have been in the resume of one of the actors.

Kurt Russell's 33-Year-Old Action Thriller Gets High Score From Expert: "Why I Became A Firefighter"
Backdraft earns a 7 out of 10 for realism. The Ron Howard action thriller's depiction of a backdraft is accurate, but firefighters now have methods for mitigating the phenomenon's effects. Backdraft is one of Russell's most iconic 1990s movies, and it was a critical and commercial success.
A real firefighter analyzes scenes from Backdraft, and the film earns a respectable accuracy score. Released in 1991, Backdraft is directed by Ron Howard and features Kurt Russell starring as firefighter Stephen McCaffrey. The film, which chronicles the investigation of a serial arsonist, was a box office hit and was highly praised for its practical effects, particularly those involving fire.
In a recent video for Insider, New York City firefighter Anthony Martinez analyzes scenes from Backdraft, including one that features the eponymous phenomenon.
According to Martinez, the movie not only gets many elements right, it was also a major inspiration for him actually choosing to become a firefighter.

The year 1990 was a pretty decent time for a trip to the movies, especially if you’re a self confessed gore-hound, like yours truly. There’s nothing better than sitting down in a packed movie theater, or even at home with the pet cat or a similarly cherished human, to watch some carnage on the screen. Tom Savini’s Night of the Living Dead was a fun remake of the 1968 classic, while we also got the likes of It, Tremors, Child’s Play 2, Gremlins 2, Predator 2 (there’s a theme forming here…) Killer Crocodile 2. Ok, maybe not that last one. Also, if you’re a fan of Stephen King adaptations, the year also brought the ankle smashing Misery with Cathy Bates in full on psycho mode, plus the outlandishly bad, in a good way, Frankenhooker, replete with all of its soft-core pornography and grisly images. Which brings us...

Sharon Stone has made some wild claims and angered 1993 erotic thriller “Sliver” co-star William Baldwin in the process. On The Louis Theroux podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Stone alleged that legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans (“The Godfather”) attempted to convince her to sleep with Baldwin during the production of the film to get a better performance out of him. An obvious case of sexual misconduct/harassment by Evans, even if it was in jest, led to a dust-up with the actress, which she believes impacted future work.

Sliver is a movie most of us probably haven’t thought about since we last saw it in the dollar bin. But here we are more than 30 years later discussing Sharon Stone, William Baldwin and their steamy sex scene…As it turns out, there is a pretty awful backstory to it, with Stone recently naming producer Robert Evans as the one who tried to coax her into having actual sex with Baldwin in order to improve his performance. And we all saw how that turned out…Now, Baldwin is attacking Stone, saying she must still have the hots for him if she’s digging up old dirt.

Who on earth would want to release a horror movie in November?! That’s like showing up to Thanksgiving dinner on a full stomach or going for a jog after a marathon. Surely, studios don’t purposefully plan to release their movie during the four weeks After the entire world is consumed with the dead, dying, maimed and dismembered, right? The calendar says spooky season is over (although you and I know differently) and as the grumpy neighbor in Halloween II says, the general audience has “been trick or treated to death” by October’s end.
On the contrary, November Horror has had some shockingly great runs over the years. And maybe there’s a method to the madness. If horror fans are lucky, October is packed tighter than a Black Friday sale at Target during a live in store Taylor Swift performance. Why not wait a couple of weeks...

The judge overseeing Danny Masterson’s criminal case handed the actor the maximum allowable sentence, resisting calls from nearly 50 of his family, friends and colleagues to allow him to serve his prison term concurrently rather than consecutively.
Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Kurtwood Smith, Debra Jo Rupp and David Trainer — all of whom worked alongside Masterson in That ’70s Show — wrote to the court as character references urging Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Charlaine F. Olmedo to offer Masterson leniency in letters dated between July and August, after he was convicted in May. They mostly touted his commitment to discouraging the use of drugs.
Masterson on Thursday was sentenced to 30 years to life in prison. Though she had the choice to restrict his sentence to 15 years to life, Olmedo declined to do so.
Masterson will be eligible for parole in roughly 25 years, when he’s 72 years old.
