I can definitely see why Netflix took this series off of life support. There's roughly 45 minutes of solid content across the 10 episodes. If you want to watch grown-ass people do nothing but cry 99% of the time, this series is for you. But if you're searching for a decent space adventure series, look elsewhere. This isn't even close.
Annoying to the extreme. Thick with drama and emotion, which is exactly how people are NOT. Good writers (and actors) know that emotion is hidden. Many space titles have gotten this exactly right, and should have served to inform the writers of Away.
This is what romance novelists might get if they tried to write sci-fi.
The people Away has selected to go on the first mission to Mars are precisely NOT like the people that would be sent... and suffers from the same character errors that Prometheus had... namely, sending losers on a massive, important mission.
Real astronauts are cool as cucumbers. On ice. Floating in a liquid nitrogen bath. Absolutely unflappable. John Glenn said of Neil Armstrong that he was chosen to command the first mission to the moon based on one criteria... that he was the most able to toss the weight of the world off his shoulders and do the job. That he had faced death so many times, and came out on top that he was literally used to it.
These kind of people are fascinating... but Away writers gave us drama you might expect from reruns of Dallas.
And the direction... incompetent. Shows like this need expert technical advisors on set at all times... to prevent ridiculous things like having the actors half floating around the room on the moon. It's a distraction that competes with the story as you find yourself asking "what the hell are they doing?"
Perhaps the creative talent, like the astronauts on Away, are all chosen by what color their skin is, instead of ability.
This show feels like it was put together by committee.

Go sees the astronauts of Atlas on their way to Mars, via a stop on The Moon.
This really wasn't what I was expecting, I thought we were in for a high action sci fi horror, but got what I would call an hour of melodrama.
If you are someone that likes intense character drama, relationships of the very emotional kind, then you will enjoy this, there is a lot of it, if you're looking for something with spills and thrills, avoid it.
The script is very cheesy, but there's no denying the talent of the cast, it's a very strong group of actors, Swank is terrific, but I'm not sure the part is up to her capabilities.
It does get a bit better as time goes on, verdict on episode one, if you're after action, abort mission immediately, 5/10.

Interesting premise, really bad writing, cheesy soap drama drivel, each crew member has a history of OTT emotional turmoil, 2 years of a crew training together & none of them trust, like or respect each other yet they're chosen to spend 3 years together travelling to Mars, each character is completely unrealistic, absurd by any idiots standard, complete lack of any scientific detail.
If this were a movie it would be on the sy-fy channel playing after midnight for the insomniacs, boring incredulous claptrap for the moronic viewer.
Yes it's bile, yes the low scores are justified, it is boring & bland.
2 out of 5 stars.
The season premier is boring. With barely anything happening. About a space crew getting ready to launch from the moon to mars. Except the crew has trouble trusting the captain played by Hilary Swank. After troubled news at home from her husband. She is conflicted on continuing mission or returning home. Boring characters. Boring plot. Dull direction. While nothing happens.

- GaffesIn this first episode there are communications (phone calls, of a sort) between people on the moon, and people on earth. They are depicted as completely, and instantly conversational (just like a normal phone conversation on earth). In reality, the distance between the earth and the moon (and the limitation of light speed), means that when one person finishes talking, it will be approximately 2.5 seconds before the other party will begin to hear their response (and that is if the other person starts to talk, the instant that the other party finishes). Obviously, those delays increase, the further one travels from earth, such that eventually, conversational communication becomes completely impractical.
