Peace Patrol

The Lone Ranger's Peace Patrol was a program designed to get children to buy Savings Stamps, low-cost stamps (25 cents to a dollar in value) that could be traded in for a $25 United States Savings Bond when they reached a total of $16.75. This episode centers on a national contest in which public schools compete to sell stamps, and Timmy is the captain of the school's team. Of course there are complications, including the theft of the money box, but in the end Timmy's school is one of the winners in the contest, the Lone Ranger and Silver visit the school in person, and Lassie is made the second animal member of the Peace Patrol, just after Silver. The episode is notable for the crossover meeting of two children's television icons.

In this episode of Lassie, Clayton Moore is featured in one of his last filmed appearances as the masked rider of the plains (without Tonto).

The Peace Patrol was established in the late 1950's as a program to promote peace and civic duty amongst the youth of America. The Lone Ranger was the spokesman, who made appearances on this show and in D.C. with V.P. Richard Nixon ! In this episode, a contest regarding the Peace Patrol is won and Timmy gets to meet the Ranger and his horse Silver. Clayton Moore was the embodiment of the Lone Ranger and shows off his gun-twirling as well as delivering a strong moral message to the young (and young at heart !).

For fans of this more innocent time, this episode is a reminder of children's television with a clear message. Hi yo silver, awaaaaaay !
