More than enough to buy his camera.

He puts down the folder on the piano and opens up the curtains, wincing and shaking his head at the bright morning light. His wife Jo enters the room. He picks up the folder and seems very interested in its contents] John? John? Has the post come?
[She notices the post on the piano and picks it up]
Dr. Jo Hardy: What's that?
[referring to the folder he is absorbed in]
Prof. John Hardy: Oh, just some equipment. 257 pounds 16 shillings and 9 pence. I'm thinking of purchasing it. Hmmph! Isn't that fascinating?
[shows her the brochure in the folder]
Dr. Jo Hardy: Well, you've got a camera!
Prof. John Hardy: Oh, not for this sort of work. Oh no, it is, really is, a necessity!
Dr. Jo Hardy: [Jo opens a letter and seems alarmed at its contents] Oh no!
Prof. John Hardy: What?
Dr. Jo Hardy: It's the estimate for the roof. John, they want 250 pounds!
