“This is what I particularly wanted to share with you — songs that have brought me joy.”
In an extraordinarily personal move from the King, Charles III has partnered with Apple Music to release his own playlist, an exclusive insight into his relationship with music from around the Commonwealth.
Recorded at Buckingham Palace in the King‘s office, The King’s Music Room begins with an introductory broadcast from Charles where he explains how music means “a great deal to me.” He says: “I know that is also the case for so many others. It has that remarkable ability to bring happy memories flooding back from the deepest recesses of our memory, to comfort us in times of sadness, and to take us to distant places.”

“But perhaps, above all,” he continues, “it can lift our spirits to such a degree, and all the more so when it brings us together in celebration. In other words, it brings us joy.”
The artists that feature in The King’s Music Room stretch from 1930s crooners to Afrobeats stars, disco performers and reggae icons. “A musical journey that reflects His Majesty’s personal taste, the show is shaped by his extraordinary experiences from around the world. In the broadcast, which His Majesty recorded to mark this year’s Commonwealth Day, King Charles III also shares anecdotes about his encounters with some of the artists featured and reveals why the songs help form the soundtrack to his life,” a synopsis says.
Crossing continents and genres, the playlist reveals a much more personal side to Charles as the royal family attempt to bolster their relationship with the public. His picks include Bob Marley, Kylie Minogue and Grace Jones alongside contemporary talent such as Davido and Raye.
“Human curation has always been a key pillar of our unique editorial approach,” said Rachel Newman, Apple Music’s global head of content and editorial. “Apple Music Radio is where culture is happening worldwide, and we are honored that King Charles III chose to share his personal playlist with us, and with music fans around the world.”
The King’s Music Room will premiere on Apple Music 1 on Monday, March 10, at 6 a.m. GMT (10 p.m. PT) for free. Users can also listen anytime on demand with an Apple Music subscription.
