
Jean Smart will return to Broadway this summer in a one-woman show.
Smart, the Emmy Award-winning star of Hacks, will star in the world premiere of the dark comedy Call Me Izzy, written by Jamie Wax and directed by Sarna Lapine. The play will run at Studio 54 starting May 24, with an opening night June 12.
Call Me Izzy is scheduled for a 12-week run ending Aug. 17.
Smart is a six-time Emmy Award winner, for her role as Deborah Vance on Hacks, as well as her roles in Fraiser and Samantha, Who? She is also known for her television appearances on shows such as Designing Women and Mare of Easttown, as well as film roles including Babylon, Wildflower and Sweet Home Alabama. She first appeared on Broadway in the 1981 play Piaf, and returned in 2000 for a revival of The Man Who Came to Dinner, opposite Nathan Lane, for which she received a Tony nomination.

The play, written by Wax, who is contributing correspondent to CBS News in addition to his playwriting work, is described as following “one woman in rural Louisiana who has a secret that is both her greatest gift and her only way out.” Smart took part in developmental readings of the play. Lapine previously directed the Broadway revival of Sunday in the Park with George, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford.
The play is produced by Robert Ahrens and P3 Productions, comprised of Ben Holtzman, Sammy Lopez and Fiona Howe Rudin.
