The NFL and a record-shattering boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul helped Netflix add 19 million subscribers in its fourth quarter, as the streaming giant further cemented its place as the leader in the space. Netflix said on Jan. 21 it has 302 million subscribers, though going forward Wall Street will have to make its own guesses around sub growth, with the company set to stop providing quarterly updates. L.A. Shoot Days
Filming in L.A. is bouncing back, though overall production last year finished at historically low levels. The three-month period from October to December saw gains across most types of production except reality TV, which logged its ninth consecutive quarterly decline compared to previous years, according to the latest report from permitting office FilmLA on Jan. 15. Shooting in L.A. increased roughly 6% versus 2023 in the quarter. Full story.

The series debut of Shifting Gears brought Tim Allen back to ABC — and a sizable audience of viewers. The Jan. 8 premiere’s 6.1 million same-day viewers is the second-largest audience for any ABC program (excluding sports) so far this season, behind only the finale of Dancing With the Stars. Shifting Gears had the third best series premiere of any new network show this season, and it also provided a strong lead-in for Abbott Elementary, which drew a season-high 3.76 million viewers.

Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video Soar Over Holidays
The holiday season brought big gifts to several streaming platforms, with YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video all hitting or tying their best mark ever in Nielsen‘s Jan. 21 monthly snapshot of TV use. The ratings service’s December Gauge rankings — which, due to a quirk of how Nielsen collects its data, also includes the last week of November — show streaming services commanding an all-time high of 43.3 percent of all TV viewing in the United States.
So far, moviegoing doesn't appear to be dramatically impacted in the greater L.A. area despite the historic fires raging across the region. Elsewhere at the box office, 'Better Man' bombed as it expanded nationwide.
The record-smashing musical has been a huge win for Donna Langley and NBCUniversal's film empire, which have proven that a movie can still be a big draw in theaters even if it goes to home entertainment early.
The studio has yet to announce Chamber's replacement as he segues to overseeing Europe, the Middle East and Africa as part of a major restructuring of how Disney operates businesses in the region.
