The NFL and a record-shattering boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul helped Netflix add 19 million subscribers in its fourth quarter, as the streaming giant further cemented its place as the leader in the space. Netflix said on Jan. 21 it has 302 million subscribers, though going forward Wall Street will have to make its own guesses around sub growth, with the company set to stop providing quarterly updates. Shooting in L.A. increased roughly 6% versus 2023 in the quarter. Full story.

Tim Allen’s Big Return

The series debut of Shifting Gears brought Tim Allen back to ABC — and a sizable audience of viewers. The Jan. 8 premiere’s 6.1 million same-day viewers is the second-largest audience for any ABC program (excluding sports) so far this season, behind only the finale of Dancing With the Stars. Shifting Gears had the third best series premiere of any new network show this season, and it also provided a strong lead-in for Abbott Elementary, which drew a season-high 3.76 million viewers.

DATA SPOTLIGHT

Netflix, YouTube and Prime Video Soar Over Holidays

The holiday season brought big gifts to several streaming platforms, with YouTube, Netflix and Prime Video all hitting or tying their best mark ever in Nielsen‘s Jan. 21 monthly snapshot of TV use. The ratings service’s December Gauge rankings — which, due to a quirk of how Nielsen collects its data, also includes the last week of November — show streaming services commanding an all-time high of 43.3 percent of all TV viewing in the United States.

How F-Bombs and Family Fare Saved the 2024 Box Office

Few could have predicted that PG movies and two foul-mouthed comic book heroes — plus sending titles earlier into homes — would be saviors of 2024.
