Miles Teller to star in ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’ remake

Miles Teller is staying in the Navy — maybe because he’s got nowhere else to go

Deadline reports that the “Top Gun: Maverick” star is set to star in a modern retelling of “An Officer and a Gentleman,” the 1982 romantic drama starring Richard Gere.

“An Officer and a Gentleman” was a massive hit that turned Gere and Debra Winger into two of the biggest stars of the era. It follows Zack Mayo, a troubled young naval pilot cadet, and his relationships with his demanding drill instructor Sgt. Emil Foley (Louis Gossett Jr.) and Paul Pokrifki (Winger, who earned a Best Actress nomination), a woman who lives in the town near the base. Gossett won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance, making Oscars history as the first Black winner in the category. The film also won Best Original Song for “Up Where We Belong.” It was directed by Taylor Hackford and written by Douglas Day Stewart, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

The new take is written by Dana Fox (“Cruella”), from an earlier draft by Matt Johnson. No director or other actors are attached yet.

The film extends Teller’s relationship with Paramount, the studio behind “Top Gun: Maverick,” the top-grossing film of 2022. He also starred in “The Offer,” Paramount+’s limited series dramatizing the making of “The Godfather.” Teller’s other notable credits include “The Spectacular Now,” “Whiplash,” “Divergent,” and “War Dogs.”

“An Officer and a Gentleman” will be the second remake of an early ‘80s Richard Gere movie in recent years; Showtime produced a series adaptation of “American Gigolo” starring Jon Bernthal that ran for one season in 2022.
