In our day-to-day life, we most probably use two kinds of computers. They are Smartphones and Personal Computers (PCs). But there exist many other kinds of computers such as Super computers, Mini computers, Mainframe computers, Workstation computers, etc. In this article, you will learn more about a very new and lesser-known type of computer that is the "AUDIO COMPUTER".

The topics that will be covered in this article are as follows:

  • What is an Audio computer?
  • What is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)?
  • Components of an audio computer.
  • Role of AI and ML in the audio production.
  • Audio editing through commands in audio computers.
  • Immersive Audio
  • Advantages and disadvantages of audio computers.
  • Conclusion

What is an Audio Computer?

Audio computer works similarly to wireless earbuds but it provides additional functionality of being a computer as well and not just an audio device. It works in a similar fashion compared to voice assistants like Google Assistant, Apple Siri, etc. Here you feel like you are not talking to a computer but to a person just similar to you. This can perform many tasks like reading your messages, emails, replying, etc. Audio computers use Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). So let's see what are that.

What is a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)?

Digital workstations are used to refine the audio quality and can be used in many other ways. The audio computers use it to make best audio tracks. The DAWs provide with many useful features for audio like Multitrack recording and playback, Audio editing tools, Virtual instrument plugins through which you can use variety of tones and sounds to compose music, Mixing console, MIDI sequencing, Audio effects plugins, Audio exporting to various file types and much more.

With using all these features provided by DAW, you can perform live, design sound for visual media, music for film can also be composed, editing in post-production, record podcasts and much more things. Due to this versatility of DAW, they are used by audio computers for audio processing.

Components of an Audio Computer

The components of any device are the most important part. The components of audio computer are:

  • Central Processing Unit (CPU): This must have high-processing power as it is essential for handling complicated audio processing and they also have multiple plugins running in the background.
  • Random Access Memory (RAM): More RAM is required for the audio computers as the DAWs require memory to run and the plugins require RAM in order to work smoothly.
  • Audio Interface: For low-latency input or output high-quality internal or external audio interface is required. Many options for input and output are provided to connect instruments and microphones by audio interface.
  • Sound Card: The higher the quality of Sound Card, the superior the quality of the audio. These can also be integrated into the audio interface.
  • Power Supply Unit: A adequate power supply to suffice the requirements of all the components is required. This makes sure that all the things will work properly without any interruption in between.
  • Motherboard: A suitable motherboard which can be used effortlessly by the high-performing CPUs and other parts and also with required connectivity options.
  • Digital Audio Workstation (DAWs) Software: The DAW platform is required to be installed in the audio computer for recording , mastering, and mixing audio and many more other components are being installed for the working of audio computers without any flaws.

Role of AI and ML in the Audio Production

Using an audio computer feels like just talking to another person but the response which are given to you in that conversation is generated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms. The response is generated by LLMs which is trained on a very very large dataset. The answer to what you ask is given by this trainings on the data with the help of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Audio Editing Through Commands in Audio Computers

The audio computers can edit the surround sound by just voice commands. For example: Let's say you went to attend a seminar and you become late so you were offered the last seat where there is lot of noise. Now you can just give command to your audio computer that "focus on what's in front of me" (meaning the stage) so it will clear all the background noise and you will be able to hear the words of the speaker easily. This thing is done using DAW and the commands.

A program is written which specifies that if this command is given do this and the audio is processed and many more things like this can be done by audio computers.

Immersive Audio

The technology of immersive audio, spatial sound, VR audio and many other technologies make the user feel like he/she is sitting in the theatre and sound is coming all around from them. This makes the user-experience much much better and user can hear things very very clearly and better.

Advantages

  • High Performance: The performance of Audio computers is great.
  • Superior Audio Quality: The audio quality of audio computers is really good.
  • Customization: We can customize it as per need.
  • Efficient Workflow: The working of DAWs and other things are maintained properly.
  • Reliability: we can rely on the audio of the audio computers
  • Versatility: ability to do audio recording, processing and many more things.
  • Screen Time: It reduces the screen time by a large extent.

Disadvantages

  • Cost: making an audio computer is not cheap.
  • Complexity: Making an audio computer requires much technical knowledge.
  • Learning Curve: time and effort to learn DAW and other technologies required by an audio computer is huge.
  • Latency: Sometimes latency issue may occur which can make user frustrated not getting an answer back.

Conclusion

To conclude, an audio computer is a device designed to process and manage sound. It can be used for various tasks such as recording, editing, mixing, and playing audio files. These systems often include specialized hardware and software to ensure high-quality sound production. As technology advances, audio computers continue to play a crucial role in industries like music production, film, and broadcasting, making them essential tools for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
