Difference between Hardware and Processor

When it comes to understanding the internal workings of a computer, two key terms often come up: ,hardware and processor. Even though they are connected, these terms stand for various facets of computer system. Hardware in computers include the physical parts of a computer while the processor or CPU especially is a particular hardware device in computers that carries out instructions. It is therefore important that anyone who aims to increase their knowledge as regards computers should clearly understand the difference between the two.

What is Hardware?

Hardware, as name suggest, is simply a machine, wiring or other physical component of computer that can be seen and touched consists of written instructions that tell these physical components about what to do. 

Types of Hardware

  • Input Devices: Devise comprises of any input device that may include; keyboard, mouse, and scanners that help to feed the system with data.
  • Output Devices: Outputs which include; monitors, printers and speakers through which information is obtained from the computer.
  • Storage Devices: Every computer has hard drives, and Solid State Drives, or SSDs which are used to store data as well as optical drives.
  • Networking Devices: LAN cards such as routers, switches and network adaptors: allowing networking.
  • Processing Components: These include the central processing unit (CPU), the system board or motherboard, the graphic processing unit (GPU) among others.

Advantages of Hardware

  • Tangible and Upgradable: Clients can plug-in more hardware, swap existing hardware with new ones, or purchase higher versions.
  • Speed: The latest equipment in the field of computers can enhance the work of the device to a large extent.
  • Diverse Functions: In hardware context, various parts play the specific roles, including the storage and connection.

Disadvantages of Hardware

  • Physical Wear and Tear: Since hardware components are under usage, they can be destroy almost or even completely destroyed.
  • Cost: Components such as CPUs, GPUs or SSDs can be expensive, especially if they are with high functioning parameters.
  • Compatibility Issues: Some of the components may not have a compatibility with other components which makes a careful selection necessary.

What is Processor? 

Processor, as name suggests, is simply a machine or device that interpret commands and perform operations i.e. to receive input and provide appropriate output as well as allocate commands for other chips and components running in computer. 

Types of Processors

  • Single-Core Processor: Serves one process at a time as is characteristic of the earliest models of computing systems.
  • Multi-Core Processor: It has the capability to perform multiple tasks at one time due to presence of multiple cores.
  • Mobile Processors: Especially designed for reduced power usage in today’s new smart phones and tablets.
  • Server Processors: Superior performance machines for servers to undertake large KERNEL computations.

Advantages of a Processor

  • High-Speed Data Processing: Complex processors used in today’s devices operate at the rate of billions of instructions per second.
  • Multitasking Capability: It builds the ability of handling various tasks at once due to the processors with multi-core arrangements.
  • Energy Efficiency: Most of today’s processor chips have energy efficiency as a consideration without compromising on the hardware.

Disadvantages of a Processor

  • Heat Generation: Portable high-performance processors produce heat and to cool these, they require complex cooling systems.
  • Expensive: However, high-performance processors particularly meant for gaming or professional use can be expensive.
  • Limited by Other Hardware: It is important to realize that even this best processor will underperform, due to other pieces of the system hardware.

Difference between Hardware and Processor

Hardware Processor
Computer Hardware are physical components of digital or analog computer. Processor is a small chip present in electronic devices and computers.
It consist of written instructions that are used to tell physical components about what to do or perform. It is used to provide instructions and processing power that computer needs to do its work or function.
Features of hardware includes disk space, memory, processor, speed, usage, etc. Features of processor includes process size, socket type, processor make and model, cache size, clock speed, etc.
Benefits of hardware include reduce cost by automating routine tasks, increase employee morale, increase efficiency, etc. Benefits of processor includes fast calculation, basic computer functionality, dynamic circuit, reduce time, increase speed, etc.
Type of hardware includes Motherboard, CPU, RAM, Display Screen, etc. Type of processor includes single core processor, dual core processor, multicore processor, quad core processor, etc.
Its main purpose is make computer or other electronic device work and execute tasks. Its main purpose is process data i.e. receive input and provide appropriate output.
Computer Hardware are important for computer to function and computer cannot work without computer hardware’s. Processor is needed to run computer and without processor no power gets delivered to components.
Function of hardware includes input information, processing information, storing information, and displaying information. Functions of processor include fetching instructions, decode instructions, execute operations, write back.

Conclusion

Thus it can be concluded that, Hardware on the other hand is the tangible parts of the computer as a whole while the processor which actually facilitates the calculations for all the operations that are run is also a part of Hardware. They are both essential for normal functioning of a computer, although are used for fundamentally different purposes. Having such classifications proves beneficial when it comes to the enhancement of the performance of a computer as well as when choosing an ideal computer for enhancement or creation.
