Gruve 7
Gruve 7 is the only coal mine still in operation in the Longyearbyen area on Spitsbergen, Svalbard. It supplies all the coal for the coal fired Energiverket power plant in Longyearbyen.
As this sign points out, the mine is operated by Store Norske Spitsbergen Grubekompani, the northernmost mining company in the world. Store Norske was established in 1916 and currently operates three coal mines on Svalbard: Svea Nord and Lunckefjell by Svea and Gruve 7 in Adventdalen valley outside Longyearbyen. With 320 employees, Store Norske is the largest cornerstone enterprise on Svalbard.
