The 7 Best Probiotics for Weight Loss, According to Registered Dietitians

Probiotics seem to be everywhere these days, both as standalone supplements and as additions to collagen and greens powders, with the global probiotic market expected to hit $73 billion in 2025.

These beneficial microorganisms are most famously celebrated for their positive impact on gut health. But research suggests probiotics might also contribute to weight loss, especially for those who are already overweight or obese.

“An imbalanced gut microbiota can impact appetite-regulating hormones and fat storage, leading to a higher body weight,” says Sheri Gaw, RDN, CDCES, the owner of Sheri the Plant Strong Dietitian.

To help you demystify the world of probiotic supplements, our nutrition experts rounded up the seven best probiotics for weight loss for different genders and uses so you can choose the best option for you.

Things to Know About Probiotics

If you’re interested in using probiotics for weight loss, the first thing you should do is consult your healthcare provider. Before starting one, there are a few important factors to know about probiotics.

They won’t work right away. “If you try probiotics as part of a weight loss plan, don’t expect to see results for a while. The research shows it can take up to six months, and you may only lose a few pounds,” says Kim Kulp, RDN, a registered dietitian-nutritionist and gut-health expert. At minimum, most research shows at least 12 weeks of consistent probiotic use is needed before a weight loss effect is seen.

Take them at any time of day. “Keep them in a place where you’ll be reminded to take them, such as next to your toothbrush or coffee pot,” says Kulp. Make sure to read the instructions on the bottle to determine whether to take with or without food, and when to take them.

They may upset your tummy at first. Introducing new microbes to your gut microbiome can cause gas, bloating, or other discomforts at first. To lessen the discomfort, take the probiotic with your meals. Start slow. If the instructions state to take two pills, start with one pill. Then slowly increase the dose. Oftentimes, the discomfort eases after a few days.

They’re safe — for most people. Kulp tells us: “Most research shows probiotics to be safe, but since they are living microbes, those who are immunocompromised shouldn’t take them without consulting their doctor.”

Probiotics alone probably won’t help you lose weight. The foundation for a healthy weight remains a combination of physical exercise, stress reduction, and a healthy diet. Adding probiotics may help, but won’t do the trick by itself.

“The data on using probiotics for weight loss are still in its early stages, but in general probiotics are safe for most healthy people,” says Scheinman.

What to Look for in a Probiotic for Weight Loss

To find the best probiotic supplement for your weight loss journey, consider these important factors.

Intended Use Pay special attention to the product's claims and specific strains to see if they align with your health needs. “Multiple strains are better than single-strain probiotics. Ask your dietitian which strain might be beneficial to your condition” says Lisa Andrews, RD, the owner of Sound Bites Nutrition.

“And when choosing a probiotic supplement for weight loss, look for supplements that contain strains that have been shown to be effective for weight loss, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium,” adds Hirsch.

Dose Look for supplements that contain at least 1 billion CFUs, the minimum amount seen to produce a benefit in most studies.

Ingredients Review the ingredient list carefully and steer clear of supplements with artificial fillers, preservatives, and other additives.

Third-Party Testing When choosing a supplement, it’s important to look for verification of third-party testing, such as United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and National Sanitation Foundation (NSF) certifications, to ensure the products meet safety and quality standards.

Research Transparency “The first thing I like to look at is if the company can provide you with any studies to back up the claims they are making. And double-check that those studies are done in humans,” says Scheinman.
