Reflector Reframe - Lindsay Tucker
INTRODUCTION:
Human Design, the Reflector Way
Something's not right.
That was the phrase I repeated to myself over and over again as I stared at my list of goals a few years back. Everything I wrote down seemed like the right kind of goal someone like me should have, and yet I felt nothing. No excitement, no inspiration, just blank. I had just finished a workshop designed to set powerful goals for the new year and during that session I was pumped for the next twelve months. I had business goals, revenue targets, fitness aspirations, just like everyone else. But now that the call was over, I was left with what felt like a to-do list and zero motivation to tackle any of it. Before I knew my Human Design Type was a Reflector, I experienced countless goal-planning sessions just like this, where the excitement of the facilitator was enough to capture my attention and take me through the motions, only to leave me feeling absolutely empty at the end.
If this sounds familiar, chalk it up to being a Reflector! While there's no single characteristic that could pick a Reflector out in a crowd, there are subtle but very common threads to our experiences.
For example, Reflectors pick up energy, like excitement, from other people. It's our way of experiencing how those around us are feeling so we can reflect it back to them. In doing so, Reflectors can easily get swept away by an idea, interest, or even beliefs that otherwise wouldn't even be on our radar. During my goal-setting sessions, I was so influenced by the priorities of those around me, that their goals instantly felt really important to me. That is, until I was away from their energy and realized I had simply reflected the whole thing. In many cases it's our hindsight that best allows us to recognize these expressions of our unique design, but who wants to always be looking backward on life?
A more useful approach is one that is proactive, puts your Reflector gifts front and center, and allows you to understand and harness your Design.
What you'll learn in this book, if you haven't already felt it, is that as a Reflector, you were designed differently from all the other Human Design Types. You're different from 99 percent of the world's population. Let that sink in.
Until now, many Reflectors have forced themselves to abide by the rules that the other 99 percent put in place. And when they follow along like everyone else, something's just not right. You might feel your energy being drained in a seemingly perfect work environment or experience overwhelm from the emotions you sense when spending time with friends. Or maybe your life has a lot of inconsistency, and you feel pressure from others to be more consistent. There are lots of ways Reflectors feel, and yet there hasn't been a way of exploring life from a Reflector’s perspective until now.
The Reflector Reframe is a concept I created to support you as a Reflector and anyone who has Reflectors in their lives. Its purpose is to view the so-called normal parts of your everyday life with a new lens where you'll be able to see possibilities for expressing your gifts, options that protect your unique energy rhythms, and ways to recreate your world without compromising your truest self.
A Better Approach to Your Human Design
The old breakup excuse of, It's not you, it's me
always pops into my head when I'm seeing things through my Reflector Lens. Looking around, there are constant reminders that the world we live in was created by the other Human Design Types with their needs in mind, not those of a Reflector. And that's okay! It's no one's fault and there's no need to point to any one Type to assign blame. It is what it is. Seeing things with neutrality paves the way for you to step in with a new perspective. If there is any part of your life where you feel tension, misunderstanding, unseen, or even a little (okay, a lot) lost, this is your chance to reframe your experience from a place of Reflector power.
Human Design is a system that will tell you how you were designed to operate and what your purpose is in life. The Type, Profile, and other aspects in your chart each contain detailed characteristics to explain all of this. And once you have this knowledge under your belt it's time to step out in the world and actually be that person. As you'll learn, the role of Reflectors is so special and unique that we're the rarest Type for good reason.
Imagine walking into a clothing store that has the widest variety of fashion styles you've ever seen. As you browse around, you pick up a party dress, some workout clothes, a business suit, a pair of overalls, and some jeans with a plain, long sleeve shirt. None of these styles go together but each one catches your eye. As you try them on you begin to notice that they all fit perfectly, and more importantly, they all look really good on you! You're as comfortable in the business suit as you are in the jeans. By the time you're ready to head home you've tried on every style and somehow you could see yourself wearing each one. So, which one is your style? Are you buttoned up and on the formal side or more casual and laid back? Choosing just one is impossible because not only can you be each of these versions of you, but you'll also do a really good job of it. You have the ability to shift from one style to another easily. Where most people have one way of being or doing things, you're highly adaptable and can step into a variety of scenarios knowing how to play the part.
That's the essence of what it's like to be a Human Design Reflector. While other Types have a favorite outfit or style they consistently come back to, a Reflector's style will change often, allowing them to be whoever that particular outfit needs them to be.
Making up only 1 percent of the population, the Reflector was designed to be different from everyone else from decision-making to their extreme adaptability, the natural variability of energy, and even the role of this Type in supporting all the others. This is great, except for when you discover that as a Reflector, the world you live in was created by the other 99 percent of the population—people who operate totally differently from you. It can explain a lot, feel confusing, and maybe even cause you to believe things are going to be tough, sometimes all at the same time!
This is often the realization Reflectors face when they begin looking into their own unique qualities, and it's at this point that one of two things happens. Either they decide that there's no way they can operate by their Design because it's just too different from everyone else, or they try desperately to be themselves as much as they can within the confines of what their reality allows. Neither way lets Reflectors fully realize the extent of their gifts and purpose in this world, leaving them disheartened and disappointed.
I don't blame them. Human Design as a system is beautiful, empowering, and utterly amazing at showing what each person is here to do in their lifetime. But at some point, there's a reality check when Reflectors start feeling that being so different isn't as much a gift as it is a burden. Or at least that's how it has been until now.
Our modern world has given us instant access to information, built virtual connections between every spot of the planet, and created an on-demand culture that's constantly getting faster. Most of these conveniences are huge benefits and make our lives easier by cutting down the work we need to do. At the same time, it's fostered a culture that expects humans to live at this fast pace, making lightning-speed decisions, committing to career paths at a young age, and building an unchanging identity to navigate it all.
Where does that leave Reflectors? Burned out, overstimulated, trying to keep up, and feeling like there's no space carved out in the collective to have a fighting chance of success. After all, Reflectors are meant to be ever-changing, not static. Changing who we are throughout life and going at our own pace are essential to our Design, even if those are not qualities that fit the mold of how we're expected to do things.
I believe that the way we Reflectors interact with the outside world needs to change, and it's not so we can fit in. In a world where Reflectors understand themselves and the systems we come in contact with (like the idea of being productive from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.!), we get to share our strengths and feel the fulfilment of living with purpose. Imagine having the confidence to release expectations and the pressure to work at the same speed as other Types. Imagine seeing your value not in how much you do but in how deeply you can connect with and impact those around you, in taking the time you need to reach important decisions so that you're crystal clear on which path is most aligned with your life's purpose, and doing it all based on what feels best, not what looks like an achievement by anyone else's standards.
This book was written for you as a Reflector, to help you understand the real gifts you possess, how to use them as your superpower, and why the world is desperately waiting for you to do just that. I'm going to show you how your success is inevitable even when things around you move quickly.
Wouldn't it be amazing if you could wake up each day with curiosity about what the day will hold, openness around how you'll feel, and zero expectations about how you should
do things? This goes beyond just having freedom to use your time as you wish. I'm talking about holding space for a new approach to how you do your work, interact with your family, and curate restful periods of downtime, welcoming unpredictable interests instead of seeing them as distractions and shooing them away. If you're anything like most Reflectors, you probably started to drool a little at that description of your day. After all, most of our lives look nothing like this. It's not anyone's fault. Our lives were simply structured and heavily influenced by the other Human Design Types based on what works for them.
Human Design as a system says that each Type, and really each individual person, is here to fulfill a specific purpose and we need to step up by living according to our Design to allow that vision to play out. Before you roll your eyes and think this is easier said than done, I want you to consider something.
When you think about your own life and how you envision the best version of it, what do you see? What could the future look like if you shared more of your true self instead of what others expected of you? Okay, one more question. At any point in your life have you ever thought to yourself, I know I'm meant to do something great with my life, I just don't know what it is or how to do it? There it is! That tiny voice that planted a seed in your mind, letting you know there's something big you're here to do. It probably didn't give you any instructions or come with a manual, and that's exactly where Human Design and this book come in.
Our world needs each Reflector to live by their Design so everyone else can do the same. No pressure! The challenge most of us face is that the society we live in doesn't exactly accommodate the way we're built to live, and it certainly hasn't embraced the value we bring to the table. But that changes now.
What you'll soon realize is that just by being yourself, whoever you are, you open up an infinite number of ways to live out your purpose. And this book will show you exactly how to live by your unique Reflector design in a world created by the other 99 percent. Not so you can fly under the radar undetected but so you can rise to your fullest potential, create a life that's wildly fulfilling, achieve success in your career and relationships, and have major impact no matter what you choose to do in this lifetime.
Author Background
My name is Lindsay Tucker, and I'm a 6/2 Reflector. If you're here, chances are you're a Reflector, too, or you're curious about Reflectors and want to learn more about who they really are.
In 2020, when countries around the globe were shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was discovering something called Human Design. At the time I'd been introduced to it by a few people in my life who mentioned it as a way to better understand who we each are. As a true personal development junkie, I was curious to learn what this system could tell me about myself. After all, who doesn’t love discovering their hidden talents and abilities? There was another reason I was so eager to dive into Human Design, though. For more than a decade I worked in a government job that, by all accounts, was a great opportunity, and most would even point to and label me as successful.
Except in the beginning of my career as a fresh university graduate who was just happy to be employed in 2008 during the economic crisis, I found myself staring at my computer screen thinking, There's gotta be more to life than this. And by the way, this happened during my third week on the job. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed this field of work. It was interesting, complex, and had lots of challenges that needed creative solutions. But I expected that once I had achieved this milestone of landing the big job, I'd feel complete and fulfilled. After all, I'd done everything I was supposed to do to be successful.
So, for the next twelve years, I struggled to find meaning and impact in a job that was great on paper, while getting more and more disheartened with each passing year. I knew that I was here for a purpose, but what was it and how was I going to find it? I also knew to my core that my purpose wouldn't be found in this job. I'd just put in six years getting an undergraduate and a master's degree. The feeling of disappointment in myself was crushing, and yet I put on a brave face and powered through. Fast-forward to 2020 when I opened my browser, found a Human Design website, and entered my birth date information.
The chart staring back at me showed strange-looking shapes, colors, numbers, arrows, and the word Reflector at the top. I was off to the races, finding anything and everything I could about what this meant. The descriptions said things like chameleon
and shapeshifter
and told me I was here to take on the qualities of those around me to show them who they really are. Time froze, I froze, and the magnitude of what I was discovering washed over me. Like many people who learn their Human Design, I now
