About this ebook

In this illuminating book, the renowned theoretical physicist Lee Smolin argues that fundamental physics -- the search for the laws of nature -- losing its way. Ambitious ideas about extra dimensions, exotic particles, multiple universes, and strings have captured the public’s imagination -- and the imagination of experts. But these ideas have not been tested experimentally, and some, like string theory, seem to offer no possibility of being tested. Yet these speculations dominate the field, attracting the best talent and much of the funding and creating a climate in which emerging physicists are often penalized for pursuing other avenues. As Smolin points out, the situation threatens to impede the very progress of science. With clarity, passion, and authority, Smolin offers an unblinking assessment of the troubles that face modern physics -- and an encouraging view of where the search for the next big idea may lead.

Written by Lee Smolin, a physicist who has written several articles on quantum gravity. String theory aims to unify all forces and elementary particles and starts from the premise that the particles we observe are merely vibrations of incredibly tiny strings, defined in mathematical terms. It is a bold, intrepid theory that relies on many conjectures and no proof. When we talk about atoms, protons, electrons, neutrons, and then make a leap to discuss quarks, we are talking about structures so small that only recently, just a few years ago, we have been able to see atoms, and it is difficult to imagine being able to see quarks, just as we might see strings. However, atoms exist, and we have demonstrated the tremendous power they hold and how difficult it is to separate them. (Translated from Spanish)

It is a very interesting book that gradually shows how physics has evolved over the last 50 years and what its current challenges are. It is a book that reasons more than it indoctrinates, and Mr. Smolin's style is quite agile and explains well things that are neither obvious nor easy. But it is a book that captivates you and makes you want to know more. Highly recommended. (Translated from Spanish)
