Embracing Neurodiversity - Jordan Hope
Introduction
What's STRONG With You?
-The Neurodiversity Foundation
My journey with neurodiversity began as a neurotypical individual navigating life alongside my spouse and our four-year-old son, both of whom are autistic. From navigating daily routines to celebrating milestones, our experiences have been both challenging and enlightening. What I’ve learned is that neurodiversity extends far beyond diagnosis—it’s a reflection of the richness in human experiences, a tapestry woven with different perspectives, strengths, and ways of interacting with the world.
As a family, we’ve faced moments of frustration and joy alike. But through it all, I’ve come to understand that understanding, empathy, and support are the cornerstones of navigating life alongside neurodivergent loved ones.
Our family’s experiences taught me that neurodiversity is not about fixing
or correcting
differences but about honoring them. From the quiet joys of a meticulously planned routine to the moments when communication barriers feel overwhelming, every experience has shown me the richness of diversity in how we think, feel, and connect with the world.
One of the most powerful lessons I’ve learned is that embracing neurodiversity is a two-way street. It’s not just about creating space for neurodivergent individuals to thrive—it’s about transforming ourselves as parents, partners, and allies. As a neurotypical person, my role is to listen, adapt, and support, rather than impose my expectations or norms.
Through this book, I hope to share the lessons my family has taught me, so that others can see the beauty of neurodiversity through a lens of empathy and celebration.

Part 1:Foundations of Neurodiversity
This part lays the groundwork for understanding neurodiversity as a concept and movement. It introduces the history and science behind neurodivergent conditions and challenges traditional ways of thinking about what is normal.
Here, you’ll discover how embracing neurological differences can enrich our lives and communities.

Part 1, Chapter 1: Understanding Neurodiversity
When I first heard the term neurodiversity,
I didn’t fully understand what it meant. I knew it had something to do with differences in how people’s brains work, but beyond that, it felt like a clinical term—something reserved for experts or advocacy groups. It wasn’t until I saw the world through the eyes of my spouse and child that I began to appreciate the depth of its meaning. Neurodiversity isn’t just a concept or a label—it’s a fundamental shift in how we see, value, and include one another in our shared human experience.
What Does Neurodiversity Mean?
Neurodiversity is the idea that variations in how human brains function—whether in thinking, processing, or interacting—are natural and valuable parts of the human experience. Just as we celebrate diversity in race, culture, and gender, neurodiversity asks us to embrace the rich tapestry of neurological differences.
This perspective challenges the outdated idea that there is a normal
way for brains to work. Instead, it recognizes that differences like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and others are not
