Introduction
To understand the future of technology, we need to begin with one fundamental truth: Technology is natural. –Gray Scott
As educators, we face challenging decisions every day as we try to navigate the complexities of today’s classrooms. Classrooms packed with students, individuals with varying levels of knowledge, and the never-ending mission to inspire and prepare the future generation—all put our expertise to the test and push us to think beyond the box.
Gray Scott’s words are especially thought-provoking when considering whether or not we should incorporate AI in education. It demonstrates that the out-of-the-box philosophy of artificial intelligence in the classroom is the next logical step in the evolution of teaching and learning. In the same way that people have always tried to understand and fit into their surroundings, AI is the newest form of this desire, a tool that can help us learn and teach better.
In education, AI can tailor lessons to each student, change those lessons based on their learning capacities, and give teachers new ideas, all of which are similar to how adaption and evolution work in nature. The challenge is to employ AI responsibly and ethically, making sure technology serves a broader educational mission and doesn’t replace human educators. In the end, this saying serves as a reminder that AI, like every other technology, is the result of human creativity and curiosity and that its function in education should be in sync with the human will to learn and develop.
Two Sides to Every Story
Let’s consider two teachers in a nearby school, Ms. Anderson and Mr. Smith. Both love what they do and are equally passionate about achieving excellent outcomes for their students.
Ms. Anderson is a teacher with many years of experience. She is dedicated to traditional teaching methods, swearing by her chalkboard and the same lesson plans year after year. It’s crucial to her that she gets to know each of her students so she can help each of them be successful. She spends hours reading assignments and giving personalized feedback in writing.
Mr. Smith, a tech-savvy educator, teaches in the classroom next door. He feels entirely in charge of his class and leverages AI to customize his lessons, change how he teaches, and give each individual the tools they need to do well.
For Mr. Smith, it’s not just about using technology to make his life easier; it’s also about getting more meaningful time to spend with his students. Since taxing responsibilities like grading papers can now be completed by AI, he has more time to focus on encouraging student participation. He has a work-life balance that keeps him energized in his career and focused on the things in his personal life that matter most. His students look forward to his classes because of the engaging, AI-enhanced opportunities for learning he provides in each one.
You may have already noticed some of these changes in your own experiences. Still, the striking contrast between Ms. Anderson and Mr. Smith highlights the seismic shifts currently taking place in the educational system.
With that in mind, we’ve seen over and over again how hard it is to adapt to a world that is constantly changing. You may be thinking about how best to use AI’s power in your classroom now that it is evolving so quickly. The worry of being outclassed by newer technologies is always on your mind. Sometimes, you might have even wondered if this technology actually helps you teach effectively or if it’s just a fad that will pass in a year or two.
What made you think of picking up this book, then? Have you been naturally curious about how you can use AI since ChatGPT burst onto the scene? Was it a chat with a coworker who told you an exciting AI success story that made you want to start, but you didn’t know where to begin? As each teacher is unique, so is their curiosity about AI. I’m here to talk about AI in detail, try to answer your questions, and get you moving down the path of integrating AI into your teaching.
