Chapter 1: Music and artificial intelligence
AIM, which stands for artificial intelligence and music, is a topic that is frequently discussed at events such as the International Computer Music Conference and the Computing Society Conference. Applications of artificial intelligence in music composition, performance, theory, and digital sound processing are currently the focus of research.
The creation of music software programs that make use of artificial intelligence to create music is an important part of this field. Additionally, artificial intelligence is the driving force behind the technology known as interactive composition, in which a computer composes music in response to a live performance. Other applications of AI in music include not only music composition, production, and performance but also how music is marketed and consumed. These other applications cover all aspects of the music industry. A number of music player programs that make use of voice recognition and natural language processing technology for music voice control have also been developed.
Rudolf Zaripov, a researcher from Russia, published the world's first paper on algorithmic music composing in 1960. He did so using the computer known as the Ural-1.

Multimedia Scenarios in interactive scores are represented by temporal objects, temporal relations, and interactive objects. Examples of temporal objects are sounds, videos and light controls. Temporal objects can be triggered by interactive objects (usually launched by the user) and several temporal objects can be executed simultaneously. A temporal object may contain other temporal objects: this hierarchy allows us to control the start or end of a temporal object by controlling the start or end of its parent. Hierarchy is ever-present in all kinds of music: Music pieces are often hierarchized by movements, parts, motives, measures, among other segmentations.
The goal of the Computer Music Project at Carnegie Mellon University is to improve human musical experience and creativity by developing computer music and interactive performance technology. The fields of Music Theory, Cognitive Science, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Human Computer Interaction, Real-Time Systems, Computer Graphics and Animation, Multimedia, Programming Languages, and Signal Processing are all utilized in this collaborative endeavor that spans multiple disciplines.
ChucK is a text-based, cross-platform programming language that was developed at Princeton University by Ge Wang and Perry Cook. It enables real-time synthesis, composition, performance, and analysis of musical compositions. as well as PLOrk (Princeton Laptop Orchestra).

MorpheuS is a research project that is being carried out at Queen Mary University of London by Dorien Herremans and Elaine Chew, funded by a Marie Skłodowská-Curie EU project.

AIVA is a program that was developed in Luxembourg in February of 2016 with the purpose of creating soundtracks for any kind of media. Deep learning architectures were used in the creation of AIVA's album I am AI
in 2018, which was created using the algorithms that AIVA uses.
