PHARMACOLOGY - the study of drugs, their uses and how they affect the body.
There are two main branches of pharmacology:
Pharmacodynamics - how drugs affect the body.
Pharmacokinetics - what happens to a drug when it is administered.
The components of pharmacokinetics:
Absorption -the process where by a drug gets absorbed into the blood stream
The absorption rate affects the bioavailability of a drug.
Bioavailability is the rate and how much a drug reaches
its targeted place of action.
Factors that affect absorption:
Chemical properties
Physical properties
The person taking the drug
Distribution - where drug goes or circulates in the body
Factors that affect distribution of a drug
Tissue binding
Blood perfusion
Cell membrane permeability
Metabolism - a drug broken down by the liver
Factors that affect metabolism
Diet
Age
Sex
Hormones
Pregnancy
Disease
Excretion - elimination of waste from the body
Factors that affect excretion
Biological factors such as age and sex
Drug interaction
Urine flow rate
Distribution and binding characteristics of a drug
How to identify some of the Generic and their Brand names:
Some of the generic drugs have the same alphabet(s) at the beginning of their names as their brand names however, most of them have more than one brand name. The brand name is selected by the manufacturer or the distributor. A drug has at least 3 names; chemical, generic and brand name. The chemical name is not generally offered to study because of its complexity.
