Defining Dyslexia
Dyslexia is a learning disability that primarily affects a person's ability to learn to read and develop a good understanding of language. Sometimes the symptoms can be very different for another person. Many children have difficulty reading and writing. After months of additional help, they eventually catch up though. Dyslexia may affect one in five children in a class. Although at least 20 percent of the population has reading difficulties, only about 4 percent of school-age children receive special assistance.
There are times when the problem goes away without any intervention. That is not the case with dyslexia. A child with dyslexia shows unexpected difficulties in writing and reading. He may be intelligent, and extra help can be offered, but he just does not get it.
History of dyslexia
The term dyslexia means difficulty with words
and was first used in 1887 by Rudolf Berlin, a German ophthalmologist. However, the term did not come into common usage until the mid-twentieth century. By the end of the twentieth century, most researchers and educators agreed that difficulties with language processing were the primary cause of dyslexia. Sally Shaywitz of Yale College looked for specific brain defects that affected children's ability to match speech sounds to the printed word.
Some successful adults with dyslexia, such as Thomas West and Ronald Davis, had a different view. They wrote books about dyslexic talent, claiming that people with dyslexia think in three-dimensional pictures rather than words, leading to creative talents in areas such as art or architecture.
Facts about dyslexia
Dyslexia is almost certainly a neurological disorder. Researchers have also figured out how dyslexia manifests itself in your child's behavior. The condition has a literal meaning, difficulty with words.
Your child has difficulty with reading, spelling and writing. Research also shows that dyslexics use a different part of their brain than non-dyslexics when reading. A dyslexic preschooler exhibits the following behaviors:
+ Starts speaking too late.
+ They get confused over words like gabrage
for garbage.
Dyslexia can hit you all of a sudden, unless it is hereditary. Your child seems fine, but any sign of stumbling means they may have dyslexia.
Dyslexia has to do with processing information. We can learn about the difficulties dyslexic children face from this. This cycle involves the way we take in information, memorize it, and show it to others to show that we know the information.
Children with dyslexia often have difficulty showing
