This isn’t a full grammar textbook—but it’s the perfect supplement. If you already know hiragana and a few grammar basics, you’re ready to go. Use this book alongside your main studies to reinforce key structures and expand your ability to create your own Japanese sentences.
? Bonus materials (MP3s + PDF) are available via the download link on the last page. Questions? We’re just an email away and happy to help.

INTRODUCTION
Taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) is one of the best ways to assess your skills and, more importantly, to give yourself a clear, motivating goal. Goals give you something to aim for. And when you've already signed up for the test, maybe in a different city, you’ve now invested both time and money—two of the most motivating forces known to humanity (aside from the fear of kanji, maybe).
That’s why I always recommend the JLPT to any serious student of Japanese. Even if you never plan to use the certification professionally, having that target on the horizon can dramatically focus your learning.
HOW TO USE THIS BOOK
This book is all about practice through patterns. You’ll find JLPT N5-level sentence patterns (bunkei), each introduced with a clear explanation and followed by a series of example sentences. To help you understand how the grammar works in real situations, we’ve mixed up the vocabulary in each example and provided notes when needed.
Most of the sentences use the polite です/ます form, which is ideal for beginners. Yes, casual forms might be more common in anime or among close friends, but we want to help you build a solid foundation—polite and proper first, cool and casual later.
We recommend reading and listening to each sentence multiple times—even dozens of times. Learning words in isolation has value, but learning words within context, while absorbing how grammar naturally flows, is far more powerful and efficient.
