PREFACE
I am presenting this book as an introduction to the subject matter of pre-1949 acupuncture and Chinese medicine. While much of what I have to say may be controversial to some, there is no denying the research behind this topic. In addition, I hope that, overall, this book will help the seasoned practitioner, the lay person, and the aspiring student alike, to clarify matters rather than ultimately confuse them.
Finally, I would like to thank my wife, my friends, and my students for their much- needed help in getting this book published. Without their assistance, none of this would have been possible.
Andrew McPherson

It is true, that the Japanese, and understandably the Koreans, Thai, Vietnamese, etc., have developed acupuncture along their own lines and have their own theories along the way. However, what we will be referring to would be so much more than that.
When we discuss acupuncture, we are referring to an area which the Chinese consider to be 5,000–6,000 years old; and which people often
