Foreword
From the very first time I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Randal Wells, I got the distinct impression that his mind was literally overflowing with hundreds of untapped thoughts and ideas on how we as leaders, managers and supervisors might inspire better workplaces.
Now, we can devour those ideas in this cleverly written book and one that will satisfy even the most ferocious of appetites for self-improvement.
Randal Wells, tells us that invariably, we make the whole process of making decisions and taking action in our workplaces far too complicated.
He shares his view that we scavenge on the carcass of complexity - a powerful thought and one that prompted him to write Simple as PQRST And U.
This book will spark the imagination of anyone who’s been at the heart of making important decisions with and for others.
The reader will be compelled to rethink what they know about leading others, through the use of a powerful analogy aligned with a very familiar and regularly performed task: following a recipe.
Randal explains that, like any recipe, there are some essential ingredients when it comes to working with others. At the same time, he makes the point that just like a chef, every manager or leader will need to tailor a particular recipe to the specific preferences of those who will be dining. In other words, he urges the reader to add in their own special ingredients to cater for the tastes of those working alongside the reader, and to reflect the special culture of the reader’s work context.
Neatly dissected into four parts, the book is easily digested.
The first two parts systematically address each letter of easily recalled PQRST. These are what the author describes as the recommended ingredients for clarifying and getting fit for purpose.
The third part, And U, explains how the ingredients combine and how the reader can add their own personal touch, just as a good chef does.
The final part highlights a range of important considerations, or food for thought
, as the reader goes about following a recipe - or as leaders do - make decisions, take action and add value.
There’s literally a buffet of important points of learning to feast on, including my favourite: that decision making processes might start with you, but they are not all about you.
Simple as PQRST And U provides the reader with plenty to dine on
in helping them to become the chef and not simply the cook when working with others towards fulfilling purpose from an organization, team and individual perspective.
