    Introduction

    Brainwashing is a colloquial term used with respect to the systematic attempts of Chinese Communists (and the Soviets, by implication) to convince non-believers to accept by coercive means communist allegiance, order and/or doctrine. More broadly, the term has been used for any tool designed to manipulate human thought or action against the individual's will, will or awareness. The term brainwashing derives from the Chinese expression Hai Nao (Hunter, 1951), which is most commonly used when referring to the Chinese Communist ideology reform (Szu Hsing Kao Tsao), a political indoctrination system focused on the premise that people who are not educated in a Communist society by definition have incorrect bourgeois views and attitudes, as well as muscular beliefs.

    The word brainwashing started printing in an article published in September 1950 by the Miami News. The author Edward Hunter coined the word as a fairly down-market version of the Chinese hsi-nao, meaning purging the mind, and believed that China after the revolution was using unprecedented, subtle psychological techniques to drive the Chinese to the Communist Party.
