Chapter 1: Introduction to Autism

The word Autism can refer to a few different things. It can describe a symptom, a disorder, and a syndrome. The idea for the conception of autism that we currently have is based on a negative social effect. The term autistic isolation comes from the description of psychiatric patients who had kept socially isolated.

Let’s discuss autism as a disorder. Autism Spectrum Disorder (the most current nomenclature for the disorder) can be considered a developmental disorder, characterized by impairments in communication and social relationships. It is a quite complex disorder. It involves delays and problems in a range of emotional, cognitive, motor and sensory abilities. The specific behaviors that might come from the diagnosis are not specific to autism, and rather come from a fundamental problem in relating, communicating, and thinking. These behaviors could be bodily spinning, perseverating on a specific word without apparent meaning, lining up toys, or other behaviors.

The behavioral characteristics involve repetitive and restrictive patterns of behavior, with the onset of these patterns before the age of three. So, the combinations of both the impairment in relational functioning along with repetitive, restrictive, or stereotyped patterns of behavior make up the what of autism spectrum disorder.

This disorder has attracted more and more attention for the last twenty or so years. The attention has manifested itself in books, research publications, blogs, and other forms of media. As the awareness of the disorder has increased, so has research. The first mentions of autism came way back in the 1960s, but by most standards, autism is a relatively new and misunderstood condition. It is a modern disorder
